Leave it on auto;
Open windows first - front / rear / sunroof if fitted;
Use recirculate or not? etc etc

Any strain on the system by letting it do all the work on full auto?

I tend to open rear windows but am baffled by the recirculation - when on auto it seems to want this on for max cooling, but with the fan on max too, it all seems a bit noisy for little improvement.

What are esteemed panel's thoughts on this matter?

And yes, I know I have a Mondeo - but it has auto climate like the C220 did

open windows for a minute to let hot air out... then put on recirc, cold and obviously EC off...

Maybe the mods or rockers can move this over to the other thread thats just started up

I saw that there; these topics may be related. I'm not worried about cost, moreover the effectiveness of auto vs manual override. Having just had a 30min drive on full auto to get to 19deg it took most of the journey for the fan to slow down and the recirc turn itself off - very similar to the C220 when I had it.

If I decided to intervene and open windows am I gaining anything over the hard work of the cooling system?

Baffled? I am

with ours we just get in, switch on, leave it on recirculate for a minute or so then switch that off.

Yesterday the interior temp dropped from 38 degrees to 18 in under 5 minutes with 4 of us in the car

That seemed a bit slow plus it wasn't blowing "ice cold" so we'll be getting a re-gas sometime this week

Opening the windows just seems to slow things down

Well look at it this way, cars are not watertight as we know from a CLK and a mod here, the are fairly air tight, by your reckoning the fan has a harder job as the warm air has to be expelled from the car to allow cool air to come in, opening the window a touch could achieve this rather than by pressurising the occupants

now I've read some comedy posts but this one is up there competing for the "utter bo**ocks of the week award"

Malcolm, have you been drinking?

No car is airtight, not even fairly airtight otherwise the doors would never close and you'd suffocate if you sat in them with the doors closed

The fan does no more or less work whether the windows are open or closed, it's just moving the air around that's already in the car. As it's only recirculating a finite amount of air then it should be quicker than if you open the window and introduce more warmer air into the loop.

as to pressurising the occupants - what on earth are you talking about???

Andy

PS, if a car is not watertight how can it be airtight?

nope, it didn't read like that at all

I wasn't moaning, I was merely pointing out that you were posting rubbish (again) mind you, I suppose it keeps your post count up :D

Mate, chill out.

Sheesh

Drop the window's for a min or two to start with then button them up and let the AC do its thing, the recirc is used to let the car further chill air its already cooled instead of drawing in more ambient temp air from the outside all the time (makes sense that this would be more effective but i don't know if it actually is or not).

If you open the windows in a modern MB while your driving along the climate control will react to it (i don't know if this happens in a Ford or not) since your just letting outside air into the space the AC is trying to cool so it will basically give up until you close them, no point trying to cool the whole world with your car's AC.

If recirc is too loud for you then use max cold and a high fan speed.

Well, certainly the mondeo climate is good; the C220 was excellent, as was the manual air con in my little A140. I will experiment with the window open/auto-on scenario, not sure what it will do after a time...

If your car is moving, then opening the window will help the flow, but only because it will be dragged outside!

It won't help the car cool down any more. It does help with demisting a bit if you don't have A/C in your car. But thats not an issue here. In fact I laugh when people say A/C is only for the warm weather. You can use the heat controls with it, and it blows warm air in, but also demists the car quick.

A/C works efficiently with the windows up. But it will still work with them down. If the outside temp is high however, it will be fighting a losing battle to keep the car cool.

You should let all the warm out as best you can before shoving the windows up if you want it to cool quick.

I should imagine I have taught grannies to suck eggs here, but hey, lifes to short to worry.

I just put it on max crack the windows for 30secs to let it move the hot air out, close up and chill, Or I just open the roof, SLK FTW :D

But my car does not really get hot, As I have Black tint.

slightly OT, but what is the recommended way of re-gassing AC - are ANY of the DIY kits worthwhile, or what should I be looking at and where from ?

We have had this up before and after quite a long thread we all said it was best left to people like quick fit or a specialist

Cringe. "best left to Quick-fit" HELP. Are you saying thet are useful for something ?
