I am told i can test the Air Flow Meter on s 320cdi by starting the engine and disconecting the plug to the air flow meter if the engine tone does not change the meter is faulty, if the engine note changes the meter is ok
Can anyone confirm if the answer is yes which plug do i disconnect the top mounted visible plug or the plug under the plastic head cover

That's not the way to check it.
You need to check out the air values. Mine was reporting very high numbers. The car ECU was calculating a correspondent amount of fuel to the rail and after a while i literally saw unburnt petrol leaking out of the exhaust pipes.

The opinion of some members on various MB forums is that if you suspect the MAF is faulty you remove the plug and, if the performance improves, the MAF is faulty. I would imagine that the best way would be to get the fault codes read and go from there.
