Alloy damaged!!!!

Today I removed each wheel bolt, gave it a clean with steel wool and painted it with Hammerite silver paint. Certainly makes them look a bit smarter.

However on one wheel bolt the wheel wrench slipped and I removed a lump of paint from the alloy. I rubbed this down to expose bare metal:eek: so put a little bit of primer on and rubbed down again, then a healthy dose of clear lacquer. Its not perfect but I don't want it to get any worse.

The question is, will this be sufficient to avoid rust getting a hold? Should I do anything else to effect a decent repair?

Grateful for any comments.

Had another look at the damage today and think I will remove the primer, it looks quite obvious now.

Could I use silver paint then clear lacquer? :)

I just want to prevent further damage and disguise it best as I can. Anyone carried a similar repair of this nature?

Just touch it in with paint then lacquer as you say. The colour will be either brilliant silver or sterling silver depending on how bright and shiny it is.
Obtain a touch-up pot from http://www.paints4u.com/

Thanks very much just needed a bit of encouragement that I was taking the necessary action. The link to that site will prove very useful as I plan to tackle the stone chips next.

I had a company come to my home and repaied my 4 amg wheels in one day .He made a fantastic job on them. They look great.they were called wheel fix. his mobile is 07917652650.I live in ayrshire, but he told me he carries out work in glasgow also.

It won't rust, but if the lacquer coat is chipped (as is probably the case) water will get onto the unprotected alloy and cause white 'blooming'. You could try patching with a touch-up, but a refurb is probably the best solution.

You can fix this yourself with wet and dry sand paper. All you need is time and patience to rub down smoothly then spray with the paints mentioned earlier.

If you're down to bare alloy you'll need an etch primer or it will corrode behind the paint.

It depends on whether you're using a water or solvent based paint. Unipol Acid Etch is good but not cheap. By the time you've bought this and the paint and lacquer you're half way to a proper refurb.
