Just got my AMG style II's fitted today (pictures to follow after a good car cleaning session this weekend!!). They currently have some chrome effect MB star centre caps, that are a little bit worn. As the wheels are in Grade A condition, i would like to get a new set, but am unsure of how to remove them and then install the new ones? Is it simple or does it involve taking the wheels off?

Cheers,

Rob

I would take the wheels off if i were you - it can be done without taking the wheels off (as i have done on a few ocassions) but for care of your alloys best to take the wheels off.

you don't need to take wheels off unless you want to keep old center caps ..

just use screw driver to make hole in center cap and lever out

So i just smash throught the old centre cap and pull it out? And then putting the new one on is just a simple push it on job?

The centre caps just push in.

The other way to get them out (without taking the wheels off) is to run a self-tapping screw in ... then you can pull the cap out with a pair of pliers.

Don't buy centre caps (or anything else) off eBay without checking the price at a local M-B dealer. They often cost more on eBay.

Porsche centre caps have two small (~2mm) holes so you can pull them out. You could drill a small hole and get them out without ruining them. Alternatively use the opportunity to get the wheels off, clean them, apply some copper grease and torque them up properly.

+1

You're only talking 5 minutes per wheel to remove and refit - is it worth the hassle of drilling holes or messing with tools etc for that?

I'd take Andrew's advice and clean the wheels/arches out, give the hubs a smear of copper grease etc.

Sorry to dig up and old thread, but I have just removed my centre caps in less than 10 seconds without damage to wheel or cap and without removing the wheels.
Badge tape!
Clean the cap with meths, put a 2cm square of badge tape on and small plastic block or similar on that. Swift pull, then peel off the tape.
Simples!;)
