An appeal to the forum collective to help out with my predicament.

Car details: W219 CLS 320 CDI (2006) with AMG kit
Wheels as per photo 19" (Click on thumbnail to see larger image)

Sadly, my initial joys of being a first time MB owner are turning to tears of frustration and dismay at possibly being seen off by the previous owner of my car.

Long story short: Drivers side started losing pressure slowly and dash indicator activated after 20 minutes of re-inflating tyre to correct pressure.

Away from home so took it to the nearest tyre bay (Merit Tyres Haslemere -brilliant service) where they took off the wheel to check for a puncture. Much sucking of teeth and "oh dear mate, you need to look at this"

It would seem this particular wheel has had x5 (yes 5) weld repairs already and the latest leak was due to another crack appearing. The Merit guy said it might be possible to repair again but his advice was not to drive it. Stuck the space saver on to get home -40 miles :(

My predicament now is:
  • I desperately need to get back on the road
  • I can't match these wheels anywhere online (fake?)
  • These are 19" wheels so do I have to replace with the same setup?
  • I really didn't want to be spending a fortune on wheels for a car I have only just bought
  • Does anyone know where I could source a replacement?
  • The two front tyres will prob need replacing soon anyway so any good recommendations?
  • Any particular reason why the rear tyre sizes are larger than the front? ie 245 35 R19 v 255 35 R19

Sorry for all the questions but I need to resolve this asap as I have a two youngsters and an ill wife to transport around.
Thanks in advance for any advice. :thumb:

Can't see the wheel clearly but it does look like an aftermarket ("fake") wheel.

You can fit any alloys that originally came with the CLS, a good OEM set with decent tyres shouldn't cost more than £500-700 which is a small price to pay for your family's safety.

Cheers. I now suspect as much having done a bit of research (click on the thumbnail to see the wheel a bit clearer)
The other annoying aspect is that the rear wheels have virtually new Michelin rubber on them

Try this site for standard alloys for mercedes:

Mercedes CLS Class C219 alloys | Alloy Wheels Direct Ltd

Staggered is normal, i.e different sized front and rear.

If it is original it will have an MB part number stamped on the inner rim, starting A219XXXXXXX or something similar.

Take it to an alloy wheel repair specialist, proper engineering firm, with greatest respect to Merit Tyre, they don't have the skills or know how.

Thanks for the link but looking at those prices excluding rubber.....

Agree prices are not cheap, but the price is for a set. And they will be similar for originals from MB.

Whereabouts are you? you mentioned Haslemere. I have a guy near me (Leatherhead, Surrey) Cranford Engineering who does Tig Welding of alloy wheels.

Alloy wheel welding at Cranford Engineering, Ashtead, Surrey

Apologies, my bad on the spelling. It should have said Hazlemere, Bucks.
I am based near Oxford.

Is a wheel with six welds in it not incredibly weak? I am no engineer but that seems excessive to me.

I know this is obvious but have you searched ebay?

If welding is done correctly, the weld is AT LEAST as strong as the metal around it so okay there. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to know if the weld is good or not.
However, seeing as the metal of the wheel keeps cracking (six repairs) in the first place, I wouldn't want to risk using them at all…………that's just me though.

Oh I can assure you that it's not just you. :D

Also the sizes of your tyres are wrong for a w219 on 19's, correct are below

front: 255/35R19 96Y XL
rear: 285/30R19 98Y XL

Here's a new set of four 19" alloy rims for £475

19" DRC DMB ALLOY WHEELS MERCEDES C CLASS E CLASS CLK CLS | eBay

What does your Handbook specify as the wheel ET's? (I'm not a CLS owner...)

The above are 8.5 and 9.5 staggered sizes. These equate to 255 front, 285 rear that someone has already corrected you on?

I was also thinking that by going with 19's you could use the two new tyres you already have.

Cheers
Robert

Thank you for the sound advice so far. It is much appreciated.

Having checked the handbook, MB recommends the following:
Front Axle: 8.5J x 18 ET 28 245/40 R18 93Y
Rear Axle: 9.5J x 18 ET 33 275/35 R18 95Y

Excuse my ignorance once again, but does the ET number (offset)make a big difference, for example these Genuine Mercedes AMG V 22 spoke 18" SL55 CLS 55 Alloys Wheels R230 W219 Turbine | eBay are advertised as
Front ET 30
Rear ET 33
It seems the rears are OK but not the fronts going by the handbook.
I am tempted by these as they are original AMG wheels and seem to have decent tyres already fitted and would get me on the road quicker.

The other option I am looking at is from here 19" MERCEDES SPLIT SPOKE ALLOY WHEELS FITS MERCEDES CLS 04-10 | eBay
but obviously I am looking at two new tyres minimum.

Just checked my existing good (nearly new) tyres and they are Michelin Super Sport 255/30 ZR19 so not even sure if they would work given the combination recommended by others on here.

It would seem whoever put these wheels and tyres on just threw on what they could.
You live and learn!!

Grateful of any further recommendations and advice before I take the plunge and part with some hard earned! Cheers

Looks like I have a good chance with these but still need a 100%confidence check from anybody who knows there way around wheels! I have read through the various informative threads on the forum and am probably a bit more confused now!!

Front alloy wheels: 18x8.5" ET30
Wheel part number: AMG B66031111
Additional alloy part number: A2304011502

Rear alloy wheels: 18x9.5" ET33
Wheel part number: AMG B66031112
Additional alloy part number: A2304011602

Will these fit straight onto my W219 CLS320 or will I need spacers?

I reckon they will fit OK but as I said, still not 100% and didn't want to splash the cash and get it wrong.

I promise to contribute more useful posts if I get a result!!:D
