Suspect squealing coming from engine bay, found out it was coming from the alternator belt. Took a closer look at the belt and the teeth to grip the wheel had worn out took another closer look to find it had been replaced with a made in japan version, hence why it didn't last too long!

So I had a 10p of every litre voucher & took a trip down to find it would start on my return long story short AA tightened the belt so I could get home & charged the battery. For a minute thought I needed a new alternator too, but worked out it wasn't true, the belt wasn't gripping correctly & in turn couldn't work with the battery.

AA man also checked the volts of the alternator during acceleration & it only increased once it was tightened but lost power when loose.

Should be changed every 36k miles routinely. Contitech are oem for MERC.
