Here's my little runabout, not clean and shiny but rather covered in flies and brake dust as nature intended :) Pictured in rural France last week....

How are you finding the two cars, specifically the engines in comparison with each other Jim?

I’m finding the W205 C63 has a huge amount of torque in the low and mid rpm range, even stock the turbos spool up very quickly and it has very little turbo lag, the torque is instant. I’ve had the MSL stage 1 remap downloaded on to mine and it really is noticeable power increase.

The comfort mode is much better than the W204, probably due to the electronically controlled dampers, I keep mine in sport mode most of the time which I think would be the equivalent to comfort mode on a W204. The suspension setting are much more noticeable.

Interior is of course much more refined, but I miss the body hugging seats of the W204.

Stock for Stock, the W205 is clearly a faster accelerating car, handling and traction is noticeably improved, probably due to the wider tyres all round and a more modern suspension.

Looks..... for me I don’t like the W205 saloon, I think the W204 saloon was a better looking car, way better. So for me it had to be a coupe and I love the look of the rear of the coupe, totally redesigned rear suspension on the W205 coupe to the saloon, and wider too.

I've never noticed the big difference in the rear end of the 63 205 saloon v coupe before you pointed it out.

The engine differences are much what I expected. Each new V8 AMG engine since the M156 has seen a increase in power and performance.

More power at low and mid RPM, and doesn’t sound as thrashy at high RPM. A quieter running engine (Mechanically). The W205 engine in a W204 saloon would be my perfect car, but I’m pleased with the W205 and the tuning potential is huge, £ pound for £ pound. To get 600bhp + from a W204 you need to supercharge at a cost of around £10k (fitted), the W205 puts out over 580bhp with a stage 1 remap from MSL for less than £1k, and a pair of uprated turbo’s and injectors will take you into the realms of over 750bhp for a lot less than the cost and fitting of a supercharger to a W204.

The W204 is still a fantastic car that I totally loved owning, and I had two of them !!!!!! But things have moved on and the W205 is an improved car as a result.

Have you been hanging out with Tim 🤔

Yes.... The W205 coupe has a totally different rear suspension from the saloon.

“What makes the C63 Coupe different is the suspension. Compared with the C63 sedan, its rear suspension is heavily modified. The track is 46 mm wider than the 4-door’s. The geometry is revised to increase negative camber. Moreover, all control arms except the toe control links are now rigidly mounted to the subframe through ball-joints rather than rubber bushings to eliminate slack. Up front, the front suspension is adapted to boost 38 mm wider track while the steering gets stiffer knuckles to enhance precision. Furthermore, front and rear tires get 10 mm and 20 mm wider respectively over the sedan’s.”

An increase in power is for sure, not sure on a performance factor. I don't think the Exhaust note has been betterd on the modern V8 to that of the M156.

The mode switch on the 204 only controls the gearbox, the suspension is the same in every mode as it's a fixed passive setup.

Another often overlooked fact is that C on a facelift 204 actually means Controlled Efficiency.
