Annoyed by overtaking

I think so far as overtaking is concerned, Hawkwind has it right. The bozos who flash, hoot and gesture unnecessarily often do so because with their level of driving skill and the performance of their car they consider that overtaking in that situation was unsafe.

I just let other drivers get on with it. If they get in my way, and I need to get past, and can't, I wait until I safely can. Mind you, with a 55K overtaking opportunities are frequent...

Drove a long road in Kiwi Land yesterday. Did meet one other car but it was going in the opposite direction so no chance of an overtake. Maybe tomorrow:dk:

What?

U-turn. Chase. Overtake.

Simples.

Had a similar thing the other day.

NSL A road, car ahead doing 35/40. Stayed well back, waited for a suitable/safe overtake place, booted it, passed him easily and safely, the stuck the CC on at 60.

Next thing, the overtaken driver is right up my boot, flashing lights and gesticulating??

Maybe he was a detailing nut job and got offended by your dirty air ? :D

Funny thing was, that particular road is straightish bits interspersed with twisty bits.

No problem at 60 in the SL, but the other guy struggled in his carpy eurobox, and had to drop back on the twisty bits.

This seemed to make him even more angry as he continued to flash and gesticulate every time he caught me up???

Having pulled in and carried on my merry way, the woman driving the car coming the other way decided to flash me and give me a very unfriendly hand gesture as we passed.

Easily dealt with.
Wait until they are close enough and can see you in your car - then give a great big smile and a big cheery wave as though it was a friend trying to get your attention.

I'm inclined to agree that overtaking on single-carriageway roads is pretty rare nowadays, and if you do it people generally think you're some kind of nutter no matter how safe the manoeuvre was.

I think some have hit nail here. It may be me but people don't overtake people nowadays. As a kid I remember overtaking was paramount lol. Overtake him dad!! I remember it well!

I'm getting old now ( 44 ) and I must say even when I want to overtake and it's more than safe to do so, I hold back. Part because I can't be bothered to get the usual flash of lights or dab of break lights as you move out to overtake. Weather in the wife's car, van, or c63 I feel as if I'll be frowned upon.

Last year about 10 mins from home I overtook a 4x4 on a long strait bit of road with no on coming traffic and no other cars around. It wasn't a fly by manoeuvre just a normal indicate, pull out, overtake, leave plenty of room and move back to right side of the road. In a way I will admit it was a bit pointless because 3 miles on I came into the built up area where I live and slowed to the 30 mph and the 4x4 id overtook was right up behind me. I indicated to pull in to my road but there was a car pulling out so I pulled in to the turning as much as I could so said 4x4 could get past. Next thing I heard some shouting and the woman had pulled around me wound her passenger window down and was hurling abuse at me saying I'll kill someone one day driving the way I was. I was in the c63 so maybe the noise gave her a fright??? But at the end of the day what did I do wrong??

I do think sometimes people are so set in there ways and get p155ed off so easy. It's better to not overtake than wind them up so they follow u to your destination and key your car up. But yes I've had the flash brigade a lot. Don't know what's wrong with some people nowadays.

Or, as a friend puts it: 'Everyone's definition of a dangerous driver is the last driver that overtook them'.
Dash cams only compound the problem.

Driver don't get many opportunities to overtake nowadays in my opinion because there is more traffic on the roads, more oncoming traffic, thus creating few opportunities. Plus many roads have white lining to restrict overtaking one way only. When the lines are continuous on your side their is no oncoming traffic and when the lines are broken on your side there is a lot of traffic approaching. Sods Law!!!!

Could it be the reason for "flashing brigade" because of what kind of vehicle was used to overtake? I never got flashed when i was driving my second car(vectra  :D)
Any thoughts guys?

I just assume the flashing is them appreciating the car. :D

I'm afraid I never pay any attention to people flashing me from behind after being overtaken. They're behind me, therefore no longer holding me up, therefore no longer a problem. If they then choose to speed up and try to overtake me, I'll let them; I try never to hold up any other vehicle up. If only everyone tried to do that..

Yes I think it's partly the type of car. Anything loud ish. I think also the some motorists nowadays are maybe of the more nervous drivers.

There are drivers on the road that take a chance and overtake in silly places. But I think it's the old tar everyone with the same brush nowadays.

Maybe it's age. But I do find its less fun driving nowadays. Much more traffic. To many do gooders and a lot of pratts that don't know how to drive.

Up until 5 years ago I always had motorbikes. And enjoyed riding on the roads. I would regard myself as a good rider having raced bikes at a professional level for many years. Due to some of the driving I see on the roads now I don't think I'd chance it. And I'm not talking about the fast drivers, we had lots of those years ago. I'm talking about the doddery ones that pull out in front of you at the last minute and crawl along at 10mph or the ones the brake every time a car comes in the opposite direction. Where did these people come from!! They wasn't around 10 years ago lol.

And they have the cheek to flash us when we're trying to get on with it :wallbash:

I must be getting old, poor spelling is more likely to annoy me these days.

I hate this so much :wallbash: It's like a little boy racers(ricer :D that's my definition) call out! :fail

I sometimes wonder whether it is down to the rise of websites like mumsnet and organisations like BRAKE who seem to get a disproportionate share of media exposure these days.
Society appears to be becoming terminally risk averse.

With these people having successfully turned breaking the speed limit into a sin only marginally worse than drunk driving, it's starting to look as though those of us who just want to get on with it, despite doing so safely, are considered the new dregs of society, an accident simply waiting to happen...

How long before overtaking on single carriageway roads is banned altogether?

Lol I assume that's aimed at me? I've been pulled up on it before on this forum. I am crap at spelling. Don't be a hater tho. I'm a good bloke in general just didn't listen at school.
