Not always
After my 300 was written off on Monday (see thread 'Death of my 300') , we had another incident yesterday morning (Saturday) when a BMW left the road and wrote off Jan's Primera

Since Monday's event I have been complaining and stirring it with everyone . One of the things I have been doing since I was on holiday is keeping a camcorder set up inside the kitchen window overlooking the bend where all the accidents occur . This is what it captured yesterday - you will need quicktime player for this

I also took many photos of the damage - here are a few

Jan's car was picked up this morning ; it may be repairable , as far as I can tell the A pillar hasn't moved so we may be able to buy it back and fit a wing and 2 doors ourselves (Jan is quite attached to the car) but we'll need to await the engineer's report .

Nasty bend that and very fast, or they think it is.

Needs armour plated fence mate.

Lets hope she gets he pride and joy back OK.

Wow. Take the tape to the council and ask them to explain why they are failing in their duty to provide safety measures on such a clearly dangerous piece of road.

Time to move I think. I live at the end of a country lane with no traffic...the quality of life is so much better than living near a road.
Amazing video. The driver appears to jam the brakes on rather than correcting the slide and staying on the power ?

Can I pay you £50 to park my old Honda outside your house for a week?

I fear it's going to be too much trouble to get it through it's next MOT & would like someone's insurance co. to buy it from me!

Just imagine if you had kids playing in the garden at the time of this one and the MB one:eek:
Dreadful that the council havn't sorted out some armco:crazy:

Did you tell the driver he was caught on camera:eek:

Im glad your all ok, but as said above I would seriously think about moving as a safety measure.

Its a shame, its obviously a dangereous stretch of road, but people driving at those speeds in that sort of weather need their head examined!

esp situation

Seems the loss of control is precipitated by a sudden loss of grip following the corner. I would be taking a close look at the road surface just after the corner for diesel oil or similar contamination. Even the double white lines could contribute to a drastic loss of grip if they present a wet shiny surface to the cars tyres. Time to ask the council for some of that high friction antiskid surface to stop this. Show them the evidence on video. ;) On the other hand the crashed car might just have dodgy tyres!!!
Did you take some pics of the other car?? Looks exactly the situation an ESP System should help prevent.http://www.euroncap.com/content/safety_ratings/recommendation.php not that thats much comfort I know.:o

oops:- bmw estate rears look ok from your last pic what about the fronts?

The road was resurfaced a couple of years back ; it is my feeling that the accidents increased since then . I have checked for diesel spillage but no signs .

Shellgrip road surface is one of the things I have been asking for .

The car had decent enough tyres so that does not seem to be a factor in this case - I think she was just going too fast for the conditions .

Wow! Ouch

Great work with the camera - should help your case immensely.

Is that a national speed limit road?

Looks like there is a slight drop in the road level on the bend.
Not much camber. The effect on the suspension of the slight
change in level combined with the drop in adhesion white lines
as you suggest would be ugly when combined with the driver
lifting off.

I always found the stuff they use for road markings scary in
my biking days. Particularly the raised thick solid ones on
bad bends. Still hate the things even after switching to four
wheels.

Yes , it is an A road with national speed limit - I doubt if any of them are even close to 60 though .

Looking closely at the video the back end is sliding out slightly before the telegraph pole.My guess is the driver lifted off and the car came back in line and fishtails however the application of full brakes (even ABS modulated) has unweighted the back and round she comes.Wet road, camber, white line, rear wheel drive and the back end weight of an estate have all made matters worse. In Germany learner drivers are taught skid control on a skidpan, here nonsese like shuffling the steering through the hands is taught. In the end frame you can see the driver is a passenger and has made no effort to steer into the skid.

I'm really sorry mate. What a week:( Thankyou for sharing you photos and video, it makes it all the more sad when you actually see it happen. I hope your insurance company are brilliant after all that hassle.

big X is spot on. The driver made a last minute correction to prevent her initially hitting the wall, suddenly over corrects to her right and from their she has not go a clue what to do. No opposite lock applied to correct the final slide that made her pay you a visit. As said somewhere else on this forum that electronics will not prevent you having an accident if you are not aware of the basic theory of keeping the front wheels pointing in the direction of travel that you wish to take.

Really gutted for you :( :(

Before your Merc was written off, has there been any history of trouble on this bend before?

Watching the BMW in that video is (from what I can remember) exactly what happened to me when I hit that wall - wasnt travelling that fast though

Twice in 6 days. Unbelievable.
