Another ebay scam - beware

Hi Alfie,

May be obvious to some, but what makes you think its a hijacked account and why does it look dodgy. Only asking cause I am not too familiar with eBay auctions.

THE BUY IT NOW PRICE IS £8600..

Its the bit that says DO NOT USE 'ASK SELLER A QUESTION' which means that if you do it will go directly to the owner of that eBay account and not the 'Hijacker'. Thats why the 'Hijacker' wants to be emailed directly :)

For exactly the reasons High Lo has outlined plus the price is way too low.

These 'hijacked' auctions tend to be short duration items also.

Why does Ebay allow this?

John the curious

Strange that its an account which appears to have recent activity on it as well ... the actual account owner would be far more likely to pick up on it if it had been hijacked.... definitely dodgy though.

John - eBay 'allow' it because they have no way of knowing whether its genuine or not unless its reported by the actual account holder .. or somebody alerts them ... the account has probably been accessed with the correct password - which is a little worrying !

Morning John,

They dont. It just takes them a while to twig whats going on. If no-one spots it (the genuine account holder) and no-one complains about it, then it rides along unchecked until some unsuspecting person comes along and pays them some money!

I might contact the 'seller/hijacker' and see what they say ;) I'll report back.....

Thanks guys. One could also email account holder, and ask them a question to get them to react?

Hi Sym,
Thanks for that, I thought that Ebay did not allow\support direct contact via e-mail?

Good afternoon John,

eBay do not support direct contact only if one uses the 'contact member' link to attempt to sell them similar goods outside of eBay. They usually contact the highest bidder of an auction and say something like 'I have the same item for sale at half the price. Buy from me instead!'. Only problem is you will be buying from a non-trusted source (and probably a hijacked ebay account) and likely to get scammed.

Cheers,
Steve

See the Q & A on the site - is this one of us?:D

Poor bugger - you've got to feel for the genuine account holders, but if buyers were more careful then these scams would never succeed and so would not happen:(

But the odd thing is that if he is able to post a reply on the auction, why doesnt he cancel it!

yes it was me - I thought it the best way to alert him to it if it was fraudulant and to answer appropriately if legitimate - seems to have worked.

Possibly leaving the evidence intact for anybody who wants to investigate it .... I'd probably leave it alone too and let eBay pull it ...

Surprisingly I've had no reply from the 'bogus' seller.

Bloody ebay. I'm trying to sell my phone on there at the moment. I put the ad up to today with an 'optimistic' ;) Buy It Now price - as you do, only to have it bought by a zero feedback, registered yesterday, user with an address in Slough.

Communication from this person so far has read...

i want you to help me found out how much "DHL courier service" will ship the item to nigeria.
Please Reply Back As Soon As Possible.

Obviously I'm not going to do anything requested above, I replied back re-stating the ad details, namely PayPal only and UK shipping only.

I'm not optimistic about hearing back... However, under eBay rules I have to wait a week before I can do anything about it. Most infuriating.

You could get him to send you the postal order, and once you have converted them to cash at your local post office send the phone ...

Dont take paypal and send it, thats less protection than postal orders !!

I have done MANY ok sales with ebay and its not difficult:

My tip is to reply firmly:
1. postal order is ok for correct amount inc recorded delivery
to uk address.
2. give 24 hrs to accept or inform that you will relist
3. then give max of 3 days to receive postal order
4. if cashed and ok - send recorded to address.
5. Any queries just relist and tell him to pi$$ off ;)

just do it !
