I have just got my CL500 its on a 51plate and has the 3 button remote with the steel key that slides in the top of the remote, today the remote just stopped opening / closing doors & boot , called the garage who sold the car and they recomended using the remote at the top / center of the back window, hey presto the car unlocked and carried out all functions but a couple of hours later the same thing key not working :wallbash: is this a common problem or is there a problem with the reciever ( both keys would not work and one is brand new) any help is appreciated..

Does it give any trouble turning in the ignition or starting the car?

There are various posts in the forum about keys, I've learnt a lot from them. Indeed, fixed my key issue using the information in them. Chap whose ID is Television is the lead and seems to say only what he has actually observed..

In my case the red lens on the ignition (where the key fob is inserted) was/is dirty. Haven't figured out how to clean it with permanent results, but every time the key plays up I swipe the lens (carefully, gently, no force) with a fingertip (dry or just a little dab on the tongue). That gives me a few goes/ days.

But remember, when my key is playing up, it'll turn in the ignition but car won't crank. And, of course, the remote won't work unless the key is very close to the front door (ie close and pointing directly at the ignition slot (aka EIS). Clean/ wipe the lens and its back to functioning again..

But then, my key is a Frankenstein, thanks to the posts on this forum - I ripped out the coil from a backup key and replaced it on this one because it just wouldn't work and I only had the emergency key to use. Oh how I would've been if I had never come across this forum. (Ignorance is Bliss!)

Does the car unlock/lock if you point it at the infa-red window on the drivers door handle ( little square window ) ??

If it does then it sounds like a antenna fault, located in the rear window. Check the relevant fuse first, should be a fuse guide in the middle of the spare wheel :thumb:
