I fill up and the needle stays at max for over 100 miles. If I flick the guage hard, with my finger, it drops to around half for a bit and then straight back to full.

Next day its probably at around half where it sits and then days later it pretty quickly drops to near empty before going up to half full again.

The warning light comes on roughly when you'd expect it too though.

Other posts here say the likely cuprit would be the tank sender or dirt in the fuel but the fact I can move it by tapping maybe suggests maybe the guage itself.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to try first?

The fault must be in the instrument cluster ,, they are all plug in units, though they are a good fit it may be a rear connection for it it losses contact with the float it will go over to full

Thanks Malcolm. I have a spare (used) cluster for W124. Do you know if I could unplug the gubbins from that and transfer it into the W201 cluster?
