Another 'what W124?' thread. Advice please.

Congratulations you will not be disappointed.

I have driven quite a few Mercedes this week. OK just two others - not 124's. An A Class 1.7D Auto - In my own opinion - Horrible (after a 124) And a very finely fettled C270D. This 270 is punchy as hell and quiet too but you know what. Climbing back into my old mans armchair is a total delight.

Stands by for incoming.

We've agreed a price, just got to organise collection etc. hopefully I can get it next weekend.

Congrats and welcome to the club, had mine for 7 years and will never sell it. If the loom hasnt ben done, that will be a job I would pre empt. In some instances a failed loom can cause ecu failure which can be expensive.
Enjoy the car and post some pics so we can all drool :thumb::thumb::thumb:

If you like the car -and the seller---- then make him a decent offer-- remember if its a"good un" there are other buyers out there and it could disappear . If there's one thing that puts sellers of genuine cars off its "chiselers" trying a wheeler dealer act on a solid car

Exactly :thumb:

If there's not much wrong with the car, and it's keenly priced to start with, then there's not much grounds for the seller to drop the price.

I've paid full price for some things, and for others have had to negotiate loads off as they either weren't as good as described or vastly overpriced to start with.

Getting a good deal isn't about how much you knock off the price (in % or £££ terms), it's about what you're getting for your money :)

Pleased to see that the buyer and seller in this instance both seem pretty sensible - that's how it should work

Spot on.
There wasn't much wrong with the car. A couple of minor niggles but nothing that is out of place on an 18-year-old and nothing that will cost the earth to fix.

It is very sound mechanically and has A1 bodywork. The headgasket has been replaced as has the rear window. It's not the best colour but it's a nice original car with my favourite interior. So all in all, I wasn't going to p!ss the seller off by making a comical offer that made me look like a wide-boy-tyre-kicker and lose the car. We settled on £1825.

What I really love is the fact that I've spent more than £30K on a new car in the past and I'm more excited about getting this one which cost less than my watch :D

Nice choice Sir. So all four windows down in the summer and a Speedmaster ever so nonchalantly just visible to complete the ensemble.

You now have the finer points of life. Hope you are a decent shoes and shirt man too.

I had a W124 E220 coupe (sold it for £990 with serious rust (never seen such a rusty car!)). It could be fast if you were desperate (using kickdown) but is not the fastest car. Mine did reach just over 100mph (got very noisy at that speed) but it can do it. From what I hear, the 300D (non-turbo) is very slow accelerating. What people like about the 300D is just how reliable it is. If you can find a W123 300D with the older OM617 engine, that will never die. It's apparently one of the most reliable and low-maintenance cars there is. The E220 on the other hand needs a bit more maintenance and things like the wiring harness go which cost a huge amount of money to replace (repairing that is the same cost as buying another E220).

They do ride like nothing else. Driven two 124s now and been in yours and they are so damned comfortable.

She's here!

Well, she's home with me now. I picked her up yesterday and drove the 120 miles home on the motorway with no drama whatsoever. She feels tight as a drum despite having 197K on the clock and cruised very happily at eighty. I can see where Jay was coming from with his comment about the five speed box though, another ratio would be nice for a steady cruise.

The car came with a huge history file and she seems to have lived at at least three points of the compass in the UK in her eighteen year life, although, coincidentally the first oil change service was done at MB Colindale, which is my nearest dealer. I had a quick plough through the invoices and she's had about £7K spent on her in the last six years.

There's a couple of little jobs that need doing but nothing major;
- I'll get her waxoyled for the winter
- light bulb out in the passenger side airvent
- alarm is faulty

Not bad for an eighteen year old!

I'll post some pictures and updates in due course.
