Hello

This weekend, rather than have lots of external drives with backups and then leaving it an age until I back stuff up again I decided to set it up a little better.

I have from my router a USB to IP convertor plugged into an external WD 1TB drive (sort of emulates a NAS storage)

Now I can access this using my laptop anywhere in the house so no plugging in drives and therefore me being lazy to backup then forgetting which drive I put what stuff on :)

I've set it last night to do a full backup of all my pictures / videos and this apparently is going to take some time.

My Question....

Is there some free software that I can install (windows 7) that will then back up only new stuff I add to my hard drive?

Included in the WD drive was its own but I could not see away of including everything in the back up, word doc, files, packages, everything basically on my H/D.

I only want the Pictures / videos.

Thanks in advance

Windows comes with a backup/restore wizard. I would have thought this could be configured to do what you want it to do.

I use the Win7 backup wizard to a 1TB external drive - it's pretty good. I scheduled a weekly backup, so I get a reminder to turn the hard disk on (I don't leave it running) when it's overdue.

I also do an occasional straight copy of all the document/library folders to the external disk, just for peace of mind. That takes longer as obviously it copies everything each time you do it.

^ thats great I will look into this

Windows 7 Backup actually works very well..

If you just want to back up your most important files then dropbox is free for up to 2GB

You can also use it to sync between multiple computers.

Here is a referal link if you want to try it. I get a bit of extra space free if you sign up using the link, that's all.

Always have your stuff when you need it with @Dropbox. 2GB account is free! http://db.tt/oPCdQFV

I struggled with windows backup on my xp pc with buffalo NAS. Couldn't get the scheduling to work.
Ended up with Cobian which seems to be doing the job - the real test is when things go wrong!

^ Ive thought that, I will back something up and restore it on purpose.

I don't want to find when I do Need the back up I don't know how to get it back or it doesn't work :(

I've also been looking at a Netgear NAS storage box which I can put 2 * 2TB drives in. This may actually be a better solution than I have currently.

Ideally you want backup storage off-site, so if the worst comes to the worst and you have a fire / flood / etc. then you won't lose everything.

Big external drives are pretty cheap now, so you could have a pair ... one at home for backups and the other kept (say) at work, then swap them over monthly.

Syncback from 2brightsparks, the free version works well

I only want the Pictures / videos.

I use SyncToy which is a freebie from MS.

You can set up folder pairs and then let it run and synchronise them (unidirectionally or bidirectionally). I use it to periodically sync with USB drives and network shares.

Thanks

I will look into what people have suggested.

Yes off site back up sounds a good idea, I have lots of storage but its all in the house (in various locations)

Maybe I need to look into that also.
