Anyone Tried RainX Rain Repellent

I've been using the external RainX for over 10 years. Works well if maintained.

There's also another one (white bottle?) for the interior to stop fog.

I have monitored these type of posts ever since we had our single wipered 210 E-class and decided not to risk using it. For every post that says yes, there will be at least three or four that say no.

We are talking about a product that effects forward visibility. Are you prepared to risk the negative points that have been raised?

Regards

I tried it on a car we were about to sell!!

Not used it since as IMHO the negatives outweigh the positives.

Good when it works though.

PS Might try it just on the side and rear window one day though.

Anyone know how to remove the Rain X. The previous owner of my 210 must have used RainX or something similar, but didnt get the screen completely clean. It shows some water marks that must be trapped between the RainX & the glass. Would detailing clay bar remove it?.

I find autoglym window polish gets it off.

Just bought some Aquapel off ebay. 3 units for £20 plus postage, hopefully this will do 3 or more cars.

See http://stores.ebay.co.uk/aml-products-online

I really enjoyed the video on the Aquapel website and the Faqs say it is floro polymer which is the same type of technology as high tech fabric guards. Rain X is silicon. {I am a sucker for the technology sell, hence my reason for always using LOreal hair products all those little molecules attaching to my hair is just so exciting :crazy: }

I will test and let you know the outcome but if it is as good as the video demonstration on there site it could be worth it.

If it is anygood I will also do our Velux windows, my specticles, all beer and wine glasses so I will always get the last drop out :D

They claim one tube will only do one windscreen or two side windows.
I managed the back window, and front & back windows on each side of a CLK with one tube, plus both mirrors. Maybe I put it on too thin or they are basing it on the size of the largest american truck windows, but so far it is working great, absolutely no smearing or greasiness.

I wonder if it's a climate thing? I have never, ever, seen any of the negative aspects of the product that have been mentioned here.

Thanks guys for all your reponses and feedback, since I already had the RainX I will be using that for the moment most likely on the side windows and mirrors only as you have mentined the chances of smear on the windscreen with the use of the wipers.

The Aquapel looks very impressive will deffinatly be giving that a go next time.

Thanks once again for all your responses they where all highly appreciated.

Just to add I use the rain-x wipes, keep them in the boot makes it easy to top up when it's not raining or you've just washed the car. Use (as others have said) on side and rear only, don't use on anything with a wiper...

I've got to say that the anti-rain X hype is a little OTT. It's not as though visibility will be totally obscured if you find it's effects aren't quite as good as you're hoping for or to your liking.

FWIW, I find that RainX works best a few weeks after application, The swept area of the screen 'matures' slightly which means that if you are worried about smearing with old wiper blades etc it'll soon wear off, leaving the peripheral areas nicely treated hence the water sheets off easily giving superb wet weather vision.

I used it on all the glass on a brand new Audi A4, a VW Passat, A Lexus, and a few MBs (W202s and W201s with the single wipers).

No problems

I don't think it is OTT to report that Aquapel beats Rain X hands down. I've used both & Rain X can leave a residue and smearing on the windscreen under certain conditions. Aquapel does not & lasts longer too.

I use PIAA Silicon wiper blades. As you use them they leave a thin invisible layer of Silicon on the windscreen so at speed you don't need to use the wipers as the rainwater just beads off.

Don't get the smearing either when you do need to use the wipers.

Received my Aquapel last week....very cheap from this supplier in the states. Haven't had the chance to try it out as yet, but I will only be using on the side windows and rear screen.

Hi Will,
I hate to say it but I disagree.

Smearing in daylight as you quite rightly say, can be manageable, BUT..... we all need to make sure we have the maximum visibility for the prevailling conditions. Please note the wording, I am NOT suggesting we can always have perfect visibility.

The huge and possibly very dangerous problem for those of us that venture out at night  :o is that this smearing then causes all types of reflective problems. As I said earlier in my own verfy personal opinion it is not worth the risk. I see nothing wrong with using this product on any other window, but to me it is just to much of a risk.

Regards
John
