Not insignificant debris, though. I've had a look at the underside of a Model S up on a ramp, and the undertray is serious armouring.
The same debris would have made a mess of my engine and not found my fuel tank much of a challenge. I'd rather be in a Model S fire than a petrol car fire.
I think with these cars you have to look very closely at your own circumstances and regular driving mileages, rather than averages. There can be a world of difference.

I meant annoying in the fact that it NEEDS the engine to keep it going, nothing to do with the noise, I tried the range extender BMW as well and when I manually started the RE engine while driving it was barely audible, in fact I had trouble deciding whether it was actually working!
