Hi all

Sorry if this is an old question but I haven't managed to find a similar post.

I am looking at late 202, early 203 and 210's at the moment. These are clearly from the worst era for MB rust but is there any patten for different colours resisting corrosion more than others?

I would think not, serious rust starts from the inside of the panel, ie the unpainted side, however, I could be wrong, ask my Mrs

I believe that some colours are more susceptible to rust than others. In general any colour offered on a new Mercedes will be less resistant.

Any thoughts as to whether say dark colours (black?) might rust less because they get warmer in the sun and maybe moisture dries out quicker?

In my experience, at the time when rust was being repaired on a daily basis, the 202,208,210,220,'s were themain offenders, i couldnt say if a certain colour was more prone to rust as they were all pretty much the same. Obvously with silver 744 the most common colour, i saw a lot of silver rusty cars and would say silver, but really they should all be the same as the rust was a problem with a) the steel used b) the building process c) the primer/paint stage d) the sealer/wax, a bad time for MB and owners.

I did wonder if there was any difference between the solid colours and the metallics?

I guess it is diwn to how well the car has been looked after/repaired, they are all 10 years + old now.

It may also be that lighter colours simply show the rust more so you are aware of it? I'm still convinced the solvent based paint systems of the 80s' early 90s were far better than the later water based systems

Hi,
If you are looking for a later 202, pay particular attention to the sills, especially around the front jacking points, as the later 202's had skirts it hides the rust very very well, it was,nt till my side skirts were removed that the true extent of the rust was seen, it required a complete new outer sill, which involved removing of the front wing, doors and the sill replaces the lower door shuts as well.
Good luck in your search.

I had a silver 1999 w202 a few years ago. I am looking at getting another as a stop gap car for a while, but I am not happy about driving one with obvious rust.

I have also been looking at Lexus IS200 of the era. They look like a good alternative but whilst rust is not a problem, repair costs will be higher I guess.
