My car (see left) has just been returned by Hughes of Beaconsfield following its 'D' service . The computer says that the next 'A' service is due in 12,404 miles. From reading other threads, I thought that ASSYST PLUS should start to count down from 15,000 miles - or am I mistaken?

It could have something to do with the fact that I do a lot of short trips, as well as occasional motorway journeys, and the computer has already adjusted the service interval based on my driving history. Too clever by half, if this is true.

Anyway, what service intervals have others noticed with their 2003-2006 model year cars?

I am to believe that the service interval shown by the ASSYST is not something rigid and changes as you drive.
On my CL it starts from 10.000 miles... and counting down... however never started less than that.
Although it does start 10.000miles and after having done 3.000miles it might show I have 8.000 miles left til next service and this would be purely on my motorway driving.

It depends on year and model and also what grade of oil was used. Check back with your dealer to see what they set it at. I think the reset milage is correct for your car with 229.5 oil grade as it will reset to just under 10000 if standard oil grade is selected. 229.5 is the seting for fully synthetic oil.

I supplied my own Mobil 1 0w40 fully synthetic oil for Diesel engines, partly due to the price charged by MB dealers but mostly because it's better than the oil they typically put in (5w40). I think I will check with the dealer whether the correct setting was entered.

8 litres of Mobil 1 0w40 cost me £46, including VAT, from Costco. And I still have 1.5 litres left for topping up. :)

After my last service it was counting down from 10,000, I changed it myself through the steering wheel controls and it went to 13,000 miles.

That was in May this year & it currently reads 9800 miles to next service, so over 4 months "free" servicing every year.

Mine is serviced with synthetic oil and always starts reading down from 15,000 miles. As others have pointed out, the remaining miles go up the more motorway driving you do.

Can aynbody explain how the service assyst calculates mileage. Obviously if you drive "enthusiatically" or do a lot of stop/start driving the intervals will be less than if steady motorway work.

What information is used? Throttle settings, gear changes, number of engines starts, average engine temp - there's a lot of data in there to use?

I think every poster in this thread has a different model and it does seem that ASSYST works differently in each vehicle.

As I understand it, only the cars on fixed intervals of 15,500/12mths will reset to that kind of mileage. Other regimes will set to lower milages - my C270CDi resets to 13000, so the OP's 12400 isn't far out.

The mileage drops depending on type of use. I only use mine for long trips and it drops in 100 mile chunks for every 150 miles the car travels - so it will go 20K between services.

For the OP, there's no reason why you can't change to fixed interval servicing if that would suit you better - depends on whether you would do 15,500 miles in less than a year.

on our 2003 53 E220 CDI it used to reset to 8900 miles which ment it was in at the dealers every 3 months which wasnt acceptable and thus why we don't have it any long :D

My 2009 C220 CDI counts down in days as its a town car mainly.

Service ASSYST 1997-2003

Many Mercedes-Benz Passenger cars are equipped with Service ASSYST. This is a variable service schedule alternating from A to B service - A being a small, routine service and B being a larger routine service. A service indicator will appear on your display approximately one month or 600 miles before a service is due. Services are normally due between 9,000 and 18,500 miles or between 12 to 24 months, depending on driving style.

Service ASSYST PLUS, 2003-2007

The majority of models produced between 2003 and 2007 were equipped with Service ASSYST PLUS. This is also a variable service schedule alternating from A to H service, with the letters indicating how much time and work will be expected to be conducted. A indicates a routine service and H would indicate a more in-depth service.

Service ASSYST Fixed Intervals, 2007-Onwards

Many models produced from 2007 have fixed service intervals. Services alternate from A to B and occur every 15,500miles or after one year, whichever comes sooner. These fixed service intervals make it easier for you to plan your servicing around your schedule, making it less likely for you to miss a service.

If i remember correctly on your year vehicle it all depends on what oil is put in the car but the dealer has to set the computer to what oil has been put in the vehicle.

A lot of dealers miss this part out

Is it possible for anybody to be able to change this as the garage i got my car from a few months back is going to do a full service and mot free of charge (had a bit of an issue with them not fixing faults before selling me the car so they are awarding me this service etc free of charge). The only problem is that it is a honda garage and im not sure if they will sort the computer etc. I think i may need to ask them to follow the service book for all the things that would need to be done in a b service etc as they are not merc specialists.

Is star required for changing oil type in the computer?

Which bit exactly, relates to my model - W203 03/04 c180k sportcoupe se?

Theres a few different methods for different 203's but i cant see which one is for the 2003/04 models.

You need to know which engine you have. The 3 digits after 203 in your VIN will tell you

Honda should have no problems doing the service - there's nothing MB specific other than what actually constitutes a scheduled service. Specifying the oil type can be done using the link provided.

Your suggestion is good you need to ensure that they follow the service schedule. I would also ask that they use MB spec fluids, eg coolant, brake fluid. Oil should be fine as long as it's at least semi-synthetic and meets MB229.3 as a minimum, or MB229.5 ideally.

If it were me and be cheeky - unless they said "basic" service, I'd be asking that they do a B-service, plus change spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid, etc. They can only say "no"!!

Opacity of the oil being one IIRC.
Interesting.. mine had got down to 1400 miles (about 1800 in reality) so I had booked it in for March 1st (I'm driving a lot at the moment)

I put 3/4 litre oil in yesterday before a 450 mile trip today, and the it gave me an extra 1000 miles!!

Great isn't it? Our ML tends to use a little oil between services, and so when I top it up I get a bonus 'extra' mileage too.

That said the bonus is offset as I tend to get the cars serviced early (about 1,500 miles to go) when it's an A-service that's due. I've learnt from experience that the cars have a habbit of switching to B-services at between 1,000 and 1,500 miles to go.

Not sure if the switch to a B-service is linked to the bonus miles:

ASYST giveth with one hand, and taketh away with the other.
