OK, this appears to be the first problem with my C320 (2001). It's been happening intermittently for the last few days.

Not been able to select D (Drive).

The times that it has occured, I've either had to restart engine, changed to another gear (i.e. reverse) then back or sometimes waiting for a bit then re-tried. Most of the time, i've had to quickly move off because I've been in the middle of the road after reversing for example, so randomly tried different things and eventually after 10-15 secs managed to enagage D and drive off.

Anyone experienced similar problems and/or have any advice?
Many thanks

I would check that the plug going into the gearbox on the front left hand side (looking from the front of the car) is secure and not full of oil first. Just a thought really.

Can check tomorrow morning however not 100% sure where the gearbox is??

Also, is it worth taking out a warranty at this stage (I'm thinking about the worst case here - gearbox replacement) as it's still intermittent? Assumption here is that a gearbox problem would be covered????

Thanks

Atf level is a must to be checked for delays in shifting problems. As Mr Walker has suggested check the electrical plug in the gearbox and if you are not competant in doing it take it to a specialist and they will be happy to point it out for you and maybe give you a few pointers on what it could be.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Someone else has suggested that the fault will be adjustment of the electronic selctor module, and access is needed for both above and under the car to adjust.

Not sure if any of you guys were pointing in a similar direction??

I have a test for you to do. When it wont go into drive when you have selected "d" look on the cluster to see if d, s or w is visible there. If not, the selector module will be faulty as the cluster recognises if the selector has actually engaged "d".

Is the oil checked with engine idling or stopped?

At idle at 80degC. To get it to this temp a road test of 20 mins with some sprightly driving will enable the ATF to reach temp.
