I'm with you, Merc 85; I've no idea why he has such a bee in his bonnet, either. As cars become more and more rolling boxes of electronics, which is what the market wants, they become less reliable. This applies to pretty much all makes (yes, even to VWs and Volvos as well), as surveys and ratings (JD Power and Which? are the ones I'm thinking of) show.
If reliability is the main criterion, buy a car from the Far East. That is what I am likely to do when increasingly expensive insurance costs with age force me out of a reasonably powerful car, but I don't expect to enjoy it as much as my various Mercedes, though. Premium brands have premium running costs.
