Might anyone know how to check the gearoil level in my car ? year 2000 vclass auto gearbox says zf on it. No sign of a dipstick in the box.

I was driving home when the gears randomly stopped changing up then will after moving to neutral with a big clunk. Then while shifting up it might randomly drop out of gear then rev up then clunk into gear again. Could this be low oil ? On the next trip it was fine...:dk: Thanks if anyone knows

you need a special tool to check the oil level of the automatic gearbox the same tool does all the auto gearboxs bar the new 7 speed auto boxs
check underneath they usually leak from the gearbox connector if its leaking put in a little under a litre they normally need about a litre when they start to leak

Anyone know also where the filler is, think i'm losing my eyesight. Bit of a leak around the drive shaft but only a dribble.

The gearbox in your car does not have a dipstick I believe. Happy to be corrected though.

The filler and drain plugs are on the gearbox. Make sure to undo the filler plug before you remove the drain plug.

And your gearbox will take some special ATF, not the normal red stuff thats currently used in the 722.6 or 722.9 boxes.

Looks to me like many car makers now tend not to fit oil sticks/sensors as it's just extra cost to them and we the people are so worried about these levels, it makes us bring the cars in for service and pay big servicing bills.

And remember, most/many problems coming out of low fluid levels will be plus 3 years from new, and the owner/customer pays up no problem.

A friend of a friend who has a fairly new Merc (less than 2 years old) was able to pay Merc dealer to fit a dip stick/sensor at his request I think, he intends to keep Merc for a long time and wants to avoid a breakdown and save money.

The same fellow paid for a new Multi Radiator unit to be fitted to his UK car (poss ML cdi model) due to Merc re-call for same in the USA as so many failures of water getting into G-box fluid I think, Merc UK agreed same part had been re-called/new parts fitted in the USA, but Merc UK just said not reqd for UK models, but part number is the same ??? all down to money I guess.....

Your friend of a friend had a dipstick/sensor fitted to one of the new 7G boxes? If its less that two years old I believe it will be 7 speed. I would like to know more if you could get some info please. Sounds interesting.

In regards to the glycol contamination issue, this was due to the radiators. They were made by Valeo. This issue was resolved and these rads are no longer faulty or used. So MBUK has addressed the issue and there havent been any reports of the contamination issue with any MB cars built in the last 5 years or so, well not that ive heard of.

momomo,

It appears the Merc sealed G-box has some type of cap/access cover fitted at a/some positions.

I'm led to understand, this cap can be removed, a dip stick can then be used to check fluid level, after dip stick removed, cap must be refitted.

Am told various G-boxes hav this option avail, when next in your MB parts department, just ask them if you can buy one of these so called dip sticks.

Am told MB and other car makers don't like owners using these dip sticks, I guess it could mean owner could keep levels at correct levels and avoid breakdowns and bills !!!

Sealed for life ??? with the cost of G-box repairs, I wood suggest oil servicing done correctly at various 1000,s of miles could be a good idea.

Though I read about BMW specialist servicing would advise oil change at 40/50K ish approx.

The 7 speed (722.9) has no dipstick. The 5 speed (722.6) does not either but it has a tube that you can put the workshop dipstick down.

The Vito has a manual level check and no dipstick is used. I will have to look it up to see how it is checked as it has been a while since I have done one.

The ZF box in the Vito to put it bluntly is cack. It changes badly often breaks and repairs are mega money.

Give me a shout Monday and I will happily look it up for you.
