Auto gears slipping?

Wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me. I bought my first Mercedes the other day and all seems fine, very pleased. Gear changes are smooth and the only problem I had found was at very slow speeds in moving traffic it feels like it changes down to first with a bit of a jolt, more noise than physical. If i come to a complete stop or accelerate from slowing down this does not happen. Is this normal. My friend has an auto vauxhall that does the same so not sure. Also noticed the other day that if I floor it hard it will not change up so wondered if it is slipping when reved high but not noticable when driven normal. After doing this though, it seems to go into a juddery vibrating state but if I switch of the ignition and start again it is fine. Could it be electrical. My only referance is an S-Type I had that slipped really bad but that was leaking from a gasket severly and you could hardly drive it. I have seen no real signs of leaking on the drive way. Hope this makes sence to someone as any help would be greatly appreciated!

A few questions that may help you.

Firstly, have you an engine warning light on the dashboard?

Sometimes the car can misfire when at high revs and the engine management system will close down an injector on that cylinder to protect the engine, this can give rough running but will be re-set when you turn the ignition off and on.

You say it will not change up, if accelerating hard the gearbox will hold on to a gear until just before the red line usually

Are the gear change symptoms there all the time or only when cold or fully warmed up?

When was the gearbox fluid last changed?

You said "I have seen no real signs of leaking" Are there any drips or stains?

You need to have the gearbox fluid level checked (not sure if your car has a dip stick in place, some models do, some do not) also have the 'box checked for leaks (the pilot bush is a common place for gearbox leaks on some models) and if possible have any fault codes read

Not if you go to an independant mb specialist(around £200),i would get that done first & see how the autobox behaves after,good luck.

It depends how you look at it, it is cheaper than a replacement gearbox

I would expect about £180 or so from an MB specialist for a full fluid change with new filter

Where are you based? I am sure someone will reccommend a good specialist close to you.

well from exsperience , cud be the air flaps on manifold inlet !!, lack of power ! or gear selecta module or gear box ecu !!! get a diagnostic done first !! ive had both problems this year , now both fixed !! good luck !

No lights on dash. Seems to be cold and hot same symptoms. Not sure when gearbox oil was changed so hope to do soon.

Was it a private or dealer/retail purchase?

I wouldn't do anything apart from take it back if bought from a dealer/garage as they may claim you have caused the problem.

If it's private then yes, have the fluid / filter changed by a reliable specialist first of all. Then have the codes looked at. You may see some old codes which could highlight an existing issue.

Private purchase, will get oil changed and filter (gerbox). Will get a quote off of Wright Tech
