Auto rear tailgate stopped working? 2003 E320Cdi Estate

Hello

My dad has a E320cdi estate (w211 model I think) a 2003 model.

The rear tailgate when you close it use to get to within say an inch of being shut then the motor would pull it down and close it.

Well its stopped doing this, the rear cover still moves into place and you can hear the motor near the catch trying to do something but it doesn't pull the tailgate shut.

My dads had all the trim off in the boot and round the lock, cannot see anything obvious? Any ideas.

I suspect the lock is kaput.

Do you have 12V there when the motor is running?

Can you flick the catch over with a screwdriver and measure the voltage?

When he lifted the tailgate open and manually pulled the catch for the lock over as if shut, you do hear the motor trying to pull it in? so I guess it has power?


Do you mean the 'floor' catch that the tailgate locks down to?

Sorry I mean the lock.

I think a closer look at the mechanism is needed. I suspect part of it has broken.
