Auto wipers, but where's intermittent?

The wipers on my W163 ML are automatic, but is there the selection for intermittent? They sometimes tend to wipe when the windscreen looks like bubble wrap, so would like a bit more control?

Well assuming it's the same as the W211 then the auto setting is efffectively the intermittent setting.

I have found the automatic sensor has been occasionally inconsistent and that this is usually sorted by cleaning it (even if it didn't looked dirty).

On mine you can still dab the end of the wand to get a single wipe.

The auto setting seems to work OK but I wouldn't fall over myself to get it.

They are expensive to fix too. 250quid for mine (I didn't pay it but it's in the bills from the previous owner)

I find the Auto setting does not meet my needs; it sweeps too often and so I keep it switched off. A variable intermittent would be much more useful.

I find the opposite, constantly adjusting the variable intermittent on my VW is a nuisance ... whereas the auto position on my SL works really well!

You wouldn't believe the re-training process I had to go through to adapt from the MB auto wipers to the VAG variable intermitent. Seriously!

For those that they do not work for, I believe there is some adjustment.

On earlier models the sensor could be disconnected to revert to regular intermitent, but I really don't see whay you would want to.

The LED sits at 45 degrees to the sensor that reflects the beam back to the pick up sensor, when rain falls on the sensor it puts the beam out of focus, the voltage drops and the wiper turns on.

So what we need is an adjusting knob on the housing to change the angle of the LED, changing the sensitivity and the sweep time.

Being an MB an electric motor is more in keeping than a knob, its all so simple

At the moment I tend to depress the stalk to get a single wipe until it's really chucking it down. At that point the Auto setting works quite well.

doesnt sound right dude , maybe want to get it tweeked through star next time its in for a service. I found it alright.

I do find it useful on BMW's that you can adjust the sensitivity of the rain sensor with a small switch on the end of the wiper stalk. Makes it much more appropriate as i agree its not always spot on all the time.

I have a feeling that there is an adjustment pot on the unit, rather than set via Star, I will take a look and post back

Excuse my ignorance.... But STAR? Newby just bought a CLK 320... Still waiting to pick her up :)

The 211 and 230 rain sensor is adjustable wit the Star. Not many people know that.

My auto wipers function works very well, usually just right.

Same here. I had one of those cars where you could adjust the interval with a button at some point in the past and boy am I glad I now have the sensor system on the Merc.

You would go nuts keeping adjusting the bloody thing to the ever changing rainfall intensity and the difference of impact when driving at different speeds. I have found my sensors both on this car as well as on the previous one to work very well.

I remember someone saying a while back and bonzodog has an e280 so .. should be ok.

Is there much adjustment?

Can't really remember. Its been a while.

Still waiting for my star.......

OK here is the real answer, the rain sensors are not adjustable on STAR

The car like the 211 with the light/rain sensors are set up on STAR and adjusable

Hope this helps
