autocar end of term report on their w124 E280

If I'd owned that blue car I'd have bought a scrapyard blower & a dealer water hose.

You look cold there Nick!

Ditto Neil.

Makes no sense to me that he'd happily fork out £350 for a blower motor, fitted, but wouldn't pay £10 for a hose that could cause damage to his car/engine.

Other than that, looks ok.

A S/H blower would probably be about a 1/5th of that price, potentially less :)

Nice hat Nick. A cooling system held together with Duck Tape sacrilege! The Journo guy was genuinely impressed tho.

Beachy Head just before Christmas? It took us a couple of hours to thaw out again afterwards!

I, too, would have used a scrapyard blower motor or, more likely, replaced the worn brushes on the old one

It was a great exercise for Autocar to do and the timing was impeccable -
right now, older quality cars are in demand as owners bail out of PCPs, leases and hugely-depreciating new cars

L403GYT - dubbed the "Old Gyt" - is a car I've driven past almost daily for four years. Before it came up for sale Mike saw a couple of cars and we test-drove a really tired E280 that groaned & rumbled and didn't know what gear it was in. Gyt is actually a very tidy E280 with lots of history but had been used as a nannymobile for a couple of years and was filthy & unloved

Mike was genuinely impressed with the car. He drove it to & from Berlin so he put quite a few thousand miles on it

I've spoken to the new owner and believe it has gone to a good home...

Heater blower is only £90 inc VAT from GSF and if you follow Shude's HOWTO is a doddle to fit

I removed mine recently, stripped it, changed the brushes before regreasing and reassembly all for about £5 and 2 hours work.

Should be good for another 18 years :D

good video there. I've not been in anything that can compare overall to my W124 since buying it - that includes several new cars. Sure, they have their faults here and there, but the whole package that a 124 estate gives is unbeatable IMO!

He says at the end, its the best car he has ever owned.... so i ask myself, if he really believes that; why did he sell it...!?
