Avarage Speed Camara's

I wonder what the highest speed you could travel between them, then slow to say 30Mph to slow down to the adverage time, would be?

Someone good at maths should be able to work that out :D

It all depends on the distance between cameras, is it a fixed amount?

Then it you could work out how far you could travel at, say 70 mph, before you'd have to slow down to 30 to make the average speed 50.

I seem to recall a colleague saying his road angel did this for him.

If someone can design a product that calculates average speeds and spot SPECs...

You saw it here first so it's my idea.

ETA: just read your post... you could travel at 246mph and then do 5mph for a bit. :D

I did get done by a SPECS camera - although admittedly not the ones on the M1. I was photographed at 52 in roadworks on the M25 in 2006 where SPECS were in place, about 2200 on the way back from Gatwick.

I got the 'Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty' and fought back.....and won.

But SPECS do work that's for sure!

I've seen that - can't some people understand what "average" means.

No need to answer that.

Most people struggle with using indicators, lights and fogs or even knowing what lane to use.

If they struggle with the application of common sense how could you possibly expect them to apply mathematics!!!

What was the speed limit in force?

How did you fight back and win?

Mmm.. Slightly gone off topic here! I was actually wanting to know if anyone had had heard of anybody being fined by these systems?

I notice that the comments have wandered into giving explanations on how the system may operate and how to circumvent it.

Many years ago I used to work with these systems in there infancy for totally different reasons! ;) and I fully understand how the system operates and it is computer based. From my knowledge, they may be a slight chance that the cameras may miss a reading of your plate if you move across lanes in the target area. However, the system is active enough to alter the target zone to grab the plate whilst you do this. If the systems are identical to what I have worked with (which I'm sure they are!) then all the camera's are controlled by a computer system so linking certain camera's to lanes is irrelevant. All the system needs is a capture from one point to the next to work out your average speed!

But going back to my original question, because of the way this technology operates coupled with my knowledge of this, I do have my doubts in how the system enforces the law and I have never heard of ANYBODY being fined by it.

So, anyone know anybody who as? ;)

The longest section of road covered by SPECS is the A77 in Ayrshire, 29 miles. This report claims 49 drivers were caught between August 2005 when it was installed & February 2006. I've since heard another report that claimed only 23 drivers were caught in the last year as everyone knows what they are now. One of the statements is interesting however, considering cameras cover a 29 mile section, the report says, "The live camera sections, which are switched periodically, average half a mile in length."

My father got three points in the early morning from the ones just south of Stanstead airport...

If the truck thats tailgating you has a name on it. Ring his gaffer It works wonders :)

I've gone through specs at warp speed on the M1 J25/J28 roadworks when they were in operation, also gone through M1 specs J13 to J10, also gone through specs M25

Not one ticket, and no I didn't swap lanes all the time..

Was done on the Bawtry to Gainsboro road.

What I dont understand is that on the A1 or anywhere else I slow down to 50 and put the cruise on, then people catch up and overtake, surely they average over the speed set of 50??

They may be switching lanes or worked out which pair of cameras are linked :thumb:

My father got 3 points at 2am driving back on the M1... so they definetely work, whether there are people on the roadworks or not!

They had them for ages on the M2/A2 up to a couple of years ago or so.

There was a petrol station right in the middle, where I used to stop for refreshments. I figured that it does not matter what my speed is before and after the stop, as a 15 minutes break will throw them off-scent completely anyway.

On the same note - if you realised you have been speeding unintentionally near average-speed monitored roadworks before you reach the second camera, juts slow down to a crawl and you'll be fine ;)

Actually - that raises a questio I had...

Do they also do instanteneous speed? I.e. I know you can get fined for taking less than the minimum time to travel between the two cameras... but do they record your speed at each end as well? So could you get a fine for speeding even though your average speed is under the limit?

I don't they they measure speed at all. They is no reason why they would have a radar, and there are no marks on the road anyway.

All they need do is measure time over (known) distance.
