Why couldn’t you insure your teenagers on a 500e?? Is it expensive?
I assume so as it's electric.

At a rate of roughly 1 litre of diesel equivalent per hour assuming 30% ICE efficiency and 100% EV efficiency. Better hope you're there a while and can plug in for the duration!Right......not one three pin plug anywhere you are going that you can plug into.......you off the the North pole???? Nowhere is that far from a charge point or at least a 13amp socket these days.
If I remember right it only cost £160 (annual equivalent) to add my 20 year old daughter to our Fiat 500e on the day she passed her test. With that in mind it might be worth running a quote in one with your children added, to see how it works out. I was surprised how little effect it had when insured in my name.
She took out her own first policy later that day and that would be just over £1200 had she added me and her Mom as named drivers from the start (rebates received when added later), and not taken out all of the bolt ons like breakdown cover, legal cover, courtesy cars, etc - that even includes business use too. I didn't think that was too bad.
Yes a London post code won’t be helping. Those prices sound sensible.
FWIW, my daughter ran a quote for herself and the cheapest she could find was £4,000. My wife looked into adding her to the existing policy and that wasn't cheap either. Can't remember how much but plenty. Too much for something she'd rarely do; tubes, Lime Bikes and Ubers are just so much more convenient most of the time.
My mate's going through the same thing with his 1.2 500 and 2 x teenagers. He was looking into one service which lets you add them for individual days; he couldn't even get a quote.
On top of that, my son hasn't passed his test yet so that's another loading.
Overall, I presume all of this is mainly down to the London postcode.
Amen to all that, you know we share similar tastes. But I disagree the logicThose prices sound sensible.

I’m dull so maybe……Amen to all that, you know we share similar tastes. But I disagree the logic
I circled the Tesla S 100D for about a year. Blue, low mileage, immaculate, full history. The attraction being that it’s the future, not the V8 past.
£735 saving on Road tax
£2000 saving on fuel
£1000 on servicing (but no saving on tyres)
£0 difference on insurance
£3735 a year saving compared to an E500, if an E500 could be found
I wasn’t put off the £3700 a year saving by needing to park at a Supercharger for 15 minutes to top up the 373 nominal range (realistically 300 real world) on a 400 mile round trip. (My estimate is that I would have to use quick external top ups no more than twelve times a year)
Nor by the belief that an EV would obviously catch fire as soon as you buy it.
What put me off was the driving experience, which simply seemed too dull compared to an E500 or S500
Here’s a typical Tesla S100D

Amen to all that, again...I had a dream the other day; for some reason I'd ended up with a white Model 3 and I was really happy about the whole thing. I'd even worked out how to get to Cornwall and back. I really must stop reading all these threads.
Anyway, back to real life. I do like the styling of the S (I'm sure I've said it before but I think it's by far the best looking Tesla). And it comes with air suspension which is essential to me - the ride in all the steel sprung Ubers I've been in is appalling. On the downside it's very wide. If I'm reading the internet correctly it's over a foot wider than my E Class. Which is insane. And I'm not sure if I could ever get used to the iPad thing stuck to the dash. Some people like it, I just think is a cost-saving measure.
The other day, though, I was on my way back from my daughter's 18th in a 2019 530e. We were all in it for a good 50 minutes to I had plenty of time to look at the interior (really liked it) and also assess the ride. Despite that it was an M Sport on 19inch runflats, the ride was surprisingly good. Having looked at a couple of forums, the best idea ride-wise is to go no larger than 19 and get the adaptive dampers.
The version I'd want is the 540i - similar 0-60 and 0-100 as my 500 but a bit lighter on fuel. Plus a great soundtrack as I'm a complete sucker for that.

Fair challenge.[snip]
Is that not perhaps because of the lack of that "V8 past" and the character associated with that?
Modern cars are very sterile - but at the same time we have at least two generations of drivers who have been brought up on cars that have vibrating (even throbbing) power units up front, clutches, and manual transmissions - and those are part of the experience.
I didn't get my car diving licence until quite late - and only drive automatics. Cars don't do it for me in the sense that I was used to - or corrupted by - the feel of a motorcycle. I go the opposite route - which is a car gives me a sense of wellbeing when coasting silently (or almost silently) on an sweeping A road.
That said the lack of tactile controls on modern cars really really ..... really really .... really really bugs me.
Blooming heck you’ve got me looking at SAABs now.Fair challenge.
An obvious question is why not a modern E, CLS, or S class ? I'm just not bothered by the tubby size, the driving sensation, or the hybrid proposition
I don't buy the AMG / BMW M class thing because i simply don't have the driving to enjoy 500+ bhp. I just want a quality, luxury, smooth car, that's big enough but not too big.
It's the repeat of the distain I felt when SAAB moved downmarket from the 900 Turbo. The later SAAB's weren't the same fun to drive.

If you find a good 900 Turbo (non-convertible) share the details and we can discuss it. (Promise not to gazump you)Blooming heck you’ve got me looking at SAABs now.
Will do. So rare to find. I’d love a convertible too. A matching pair in black would be ideal if you spot them!If you find a good 900 Turbo (non-convertible) share the details and we can discuss it. (Promise not to gazump you)
I can’t remember seeing a decent RHD one for more than a decade at any price. “For some reason” the owners seem to put serious miles on SAAB Turbos

Yeah, it's an estimate but you're not wrong about the distances. You can drive for 12 hours at 70 miles per hour and still be in Texas. The only car I track is my 05 E320 CDI which did 10k this year. I had another CDI that I recently sold and a s 8uper duty in rotation. Of course, none of my 70's and 80's Mercedes have working odometer gears which make them all low mileage originals.Sheesh ! 20,000 a year in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex ?
You old stay at home.
That's really not very far for place where a cinema (Movie Theatre) or Restaurant visit can easily be an 80 mile round trip.
To quote my wife, “does size matter?”Yeah, it's an estimate but you're not wrong about the distances. You can drive for 12 hours at 70 miles per hour and still be in Texas.
