Got a message from a mate this morning:

Have you moved to AVG 7.5? I have tried several d/loads from different sites and, each time, it seems to load ok but doesn't actually install ( although it always says installation sucessful). I have turned zone fwall and XPSP2 fwall off but it makes no diff. Any thoughts?

I don't use AVG anymore so don't have a clue. Anybody have any thoughts?

I downloaded and installed AVG last week for a friend. Worked fine for me. Had problems finding free edition on AVG website. Went to www.download.com and had no problems.

It's downloaded fine - just won't complete the install.

Is there another AV program installed already?

There is one bug I know about that stops the installation completing. This fix will often allow an installation to complete but once installed you need to update the XP plug-in.

Nope - it's the only one on. He's used it for yonks and it's just this update that's having the prob's. he's done a full uninstall and a clean install - no diff:crazy:

Has he successfully updated 7.5 before and it is just the latest update file that isn't installing or has he not been able to update 7.5 since it was first installed?

If he was running 7.1 before and upgraded to XPSP2 there are some system changes SP2 makes that might prevent 7.5 connecting to the update server at Grisoft.

I'll find out - thanks ;)

He has been running XPSP2 for sometime with 7.1 and no prob's. It's purely the install of 7.5 that doesn't succeed. SP2 was on before 7.1 went on.

This might be it - My guess is the sequence of events is important:

7.1 installed, inherits permission from XP SP1 to talk to the update server

SP2 installed - more draconian security, won't hand out rights as easily but anything that has already been allowed is OK (so 7.1 continues to work OK).

7.5 installed - SP2 now prevents permission to contact the server so program loads but isn't allowed to update from the server.

If this is what he's getting it's worth trying the fix described here.
