How do you stop it returning?

Either it needs to be ground right back to fresh metal, not bare metal, because if black spots are seen, then this is where rust will come back from. Then you can add a rust inhibitor, I've used Jenolite and then zinc primer, normal primer and paint.

If it is particularly bad then it needs to be cut out and replaced with brand new fresh metal.

Cars looking very smart indeed !

Back from rust removal - 2

Just seen this thread having also got my 2004 SLK320 (R170) today `Back from rust removal` repaired by Mercedes under the 30 year Corrosion Warranty (reduced to 8 yrs by Mercedes).I discovered rust on 4 wheel arch lips and one front wing. Following initial inspection at my Mercedes dealer, I heard nothing and after 5 weeks wrote a strong letter recorded delivery to Mercedes Customer Services at Milton Keynes and attached a copy of the 30 year warranty for corrosion from my service book. Strangely, the same day they received the letter I got a phone call from them asking me to contact my local Dealer as the full repair had been authorised. I have just collected the car from them after a 4 day repair job and use of a loan car. They showed me a written procedure that they now follow that includes sandblasting, and use of resin, etc and apply sealant along the inner edge of the wheel arch lips – so they do seem to have improved their approach compared to previous cases I have read about on the forum. There was rust on 25% of each wheel arch lip and also a couple of inches of bubbling on the leading edge of one of the wings. They repaired the whole lip of each wheel arch, and the full leading edge of both wings where it meets the bumper, even though only one was affected so far. As a finishing touch, they applied silicon paint sealant to the whole car and valeted inside. The car looks like brand new, now with not a mark on it. In fact they were so courteous and helpful, I couldn’t quite believe it. So I ask myself, was I lucky, or are Mercedes changing their approach to rust repairs under warranty in response to criticism and bad press? Only time will tell and if we hear of similar experiences on the forum. I hope the rust will now stay away for a few years, but if not I will be driving down to see `CKLclive` so he can work his magic with his 5 year warranty corrosion repair !
