We arrived back in the UK on Friday with the new SClass.

We left on Tuesday for Stuttgart and arrived at 11 o'clock, we where met and taken to the Schlossgarten Hotel by a VW Carrevelle. Had some lunch then visited the museum which i thoroughly recommend. A wonderful experience to see all of your favourite cars under the one roof it was great.

As we had a 350 mile drive to our hotel in France we decided to get to the factory early the next day and have the handover and paperwork done before the factory tour, we arrived about 9 o'clock the taxi was a Chrysler Voyageur nearly a Mercedes. We where met and our luggage was taken and put into storage until the handover of the car was done. The paperwork took about 20minutes, as we had 30 minutes before the handover, we went to the shop and i bought some mats which had been fitted when we got to the car. Anna was given a key ring with her name engraved on it, a nice touch.

While we where waiting for the handover and having a cup of coffee which is on the first floor overlooking where the cars come out to be collected our car arrived through this hole in the wall, Anna got quite emotional, you ladies :) .

The handover took just over the hour and was very comprehensive. I also took the car phone cradle with me for them to fit which they did and paired it with the Bluetooth.

We where very lucky with the factory tour as we where the only two on the English tour. The guide asked us which car we had bought, so we had an exclusive SClass only tour which was incredible i won't bore you with the details, needless to say it was very impressive. After nearly two hours we where taken to our car.

Driving the 350 miles to our hotel in France in the new car was wonderful, you forget what a pleasure it is to drive on smooth traffic free roads.
The difference between the W220 and the new SClass is incredible, i know my old SClass was a V6 320 against the V8 5.5. The hole ride is different the seats are so much more supportive and i thought the 220 was the most comfortable car i had driven. I know a few people who already have the 221 and told me how different an how much it has improved.

I had Distronic Plus fitted and i have got to say what an amazing piece of kit it is, the first couple of times i tried it i bottled out and braked when the car in front got nearer then as i started to believe that it would slow me down i used it most of the way home, i am very pleased i chose that option.

I hope i haven't waffled on to much, just to say the whole experience was very worthwhile. Photo' to follow.

Sounds like a good trip, and a great car!! Enjoy!!

I love the bottled out bit on the Distronic, it does take a while to trust it, it will give you a bleep if it cant cope so that you can intervene

Sounds fun and I hope you continue to enjoy your new car.:D
Interested to hear you feel the comfort level is a step up from the W220, that was my impression too, but unless you drive a reasoanable distance its not easy to quanitfy.
I understand that Mercedes claim that driving the S Class ensures a lower pulse rate that 'conventional' cars. I have not fallen to sleep yet, but I know I am less stressed and tired after a long drive in mine:)
Let's see some pics when the sun comes out!

Glad you enjoyed the trip and glad you are back safely. we cabn't wait to see the car!!

I have regretted not getting distronic on my current car a lot. Your story reaffirms me again in my intention that my next s-class will have it :).

Everyone I know has enjoyed the whole thing about the Personal Collection.

The car sounds superb, get the photos up:D

One day I will go and have a tour of the factory, and just sit there and imagine that my new car will come out of that hole in the wall :)

Congratulations on the new arrival and you certainly didn't waffle on: it was a very informative post, especially as my wife and I are off to collect our first Mercedes from Stuttgart later this week. I hope we enjoy the experience as much as you obviously did. :bannana:

I am sure you will, good luck and a safe journey.

Glad you enjoyed it we did the same in 1998 and I wish I had done it again to pick up my current car...

wow... sounds great, i agree that the W221 is an amazing car which has come on leaps from the W220... but that is always the case with the flagship Mercedes range... this is what a Mercedes is all about...

now come on, where are those pics?

Great news, hope your new car brings you as much enjoyment as mine did.

I certainly am at the moment Brian.

My best friend is still pleased with his, it is the one with everything possible to have, I must ask him if the Nav is now showing correctly longitude from Greenwich

Yeah, come on Pete! Alternatively lunch at MB World?

I took some at the factory which did not come out so very well. I will take some more soon. And as i am hopeless at posting them i have to get a fellow member to show me again how to do it.

Lunch sounds great as well.

You probably get taken to the factory from the airport in a W124 though :D.
