Back in the fold

Nice wheels. I had a tan interior W207 E coupe and it was a swine to keep clean - at least once a month I had to and I could never keep the stitching white where I slid in and out of the seat!

At the moment I'm being very careful about getting in and out so as not to scuff the bolsters, though goodness knows how long I'll manage to keep that up for! Unfortunately the standard black nappa also comes with white stitching (another good reason to swap it out!), whereas the designo stitching is discreetly colour-matched to the hide (see below). Alternatively, if I go for the bespoke DKS option I will be able to specify the colour of the stitching.

Despite deliberately having opted for the most innocuous colour choice for the SLK, it still seems to attract attention. Took it down to the Science Museum last night to get some snaps (an exercise that confirmed that I really do need to invest in a decent camera that can handle low light conditions properly), and received a non-stop stream of positive comments from passers by - mainly young student or tourist types. I think my new car may have 'cred'... :p

One chap in particular stopped for a chat. Said he was studying at the RCA and had a particular interest in German engineering and car design (I think I detected what was a faint German accent), and he thought they'd got the R172 just right. He also pointed out that he was pleased that they'd reverted to the SLK's roots by simplifying the interior design - something that hadn't occurred to me despite having owned an R170 a few years ago. I'd blindly thought of the R172's dashboard (and that of the R231, for that matter) as being a dumbed-down - and slightly wonky - version of that in the SLS, but he was right: the R170's cockpit DNA is quite evident.

Looks fantastic, I thought you were having the badges removed?

That was the plan, but it came with them on so I'm going to see whether I can live with them. If not, they can always come off later.

Time to move outside your comfort zone MOCAS, they are meant to be there.

I now officially hate you - for making me turn this shade of green :D. The one and only time I drove one of those I wanted to risk imprisonment by stealing it. In that colour it's simply gorgeous, and will be even better when you get the right colour indoors. As for the hairdresser remarks, Mrs KE loves the car too - and she really is a hairdresser!

Looking forward to more pictures to drool over.

Thanks KE. I've added a new gallery to bring together the photos I've posted across the forum so far.

Totally awesome , as my 4 year old said .

lovely ..

especially the wheels, which really suit the car

tan leather is stunning :)

Thanks d215.

Re Trax, I don't think a standard eco-spec SLK55 would be anything special in comparison to some of the beefier AMG machinery likely to be participating.

There was a standard SLK55 last year.

Also MW_C32's C63 was completely bogo and did 4.3 secs .

It's a great day out.

You're right about the camera. Those shots don't appear to do the car any justice. imo. :fail :)

:)

The general quality of the shots produced by the camera on my iPod never ceases to amaze me, given its size and the fact that photography is merely a secondary function. But alas, it has its limitations, particularly when it comes to zooming, low light conditions and moving subjects (no, not sob stories!).

So today I have invested in a Canon Powershot jobbie - nothing too fancy, but hopefully something I can get my head around and start exploring some of the manual settings. Only downside is that I need to give the battery a full charge first...

It's certainly more butch than fem.

Just watch those wheels on the salon kerb.

Are those hoops behind the seats mounts for the full head hair dryers?
