By crikey you Northern boys and girls the weather looks grim tonight, please take care on ther journey home as there are winds being reported of being in excess of 70mph.

Hoist the mainsail and jib, switch off the engine and hang on. ;)

Take care

Regards
John

That's normal weather oop North as Mr Walker told me on the telephonic apparatus earlier ;)

Coming back from Hull to Bradford on the M62 this afternoon was horrendous . I've not known anything like that for a good few years, at least my house is in one piece, so far!!!!

I had to smile when I read your post as it reminded me so much of an old TV advert.

I think a bloke wearing a sou-wester gets blown into a pub and says something like, "I've never known anything like it, and I'm not looking forward to the journey home!"

Then with rain water dripping from his sou-wester he starts drinking a nice pint of beer. Now whenever anyone says, "I've never known anything like it" I always think of this advert. It would be great advertising if I could remember the brand of beer. :o :o

Glad to hear you got home alright, now stay indoors and batten down the hatches. The weather down here hs been beautiful and thankfully no strong winds.

John

Wasn't it Fishermans Friend? I could be wrong
Might have been, I can only remember the bloke being blown into the pub:o :o :o :o

Wow.......
Scumbag
On news they just showed footage of a small Lear jet type executive aircraft coming into land at Leeds Airport:eek:     The thing was coming down nigh on broadside to the runway:eek: Was there five 'eeks' and only one at the end of the sentence?

Scary sight watching that jet land, I bet the pilot has "Never known a night like it" :o :o

Just seen that; pilot did very well indeed ;)

Like Portzy I had a journey and a half yesterday. Coming down the A1 to the M62 there seemed to be wagons blown over every couple of miles.
My house is still in one piece this morning but the greenhouse has taken a battering.

Oh and John, I also saw that plane on the news coming down sideways at Leeds/Bradford, more like flying a kite than a plane. I bet that left some skid marks.

"Never seen owt like it"

Did he land?

After 19years of working in the aforementioned airport on the top of hill, there were occasions when they didnt quite make it.

I shall go look for a pic.

Cause he did, you don't think he's still up there do you?   Sorry about that. (silly sense of humour moment)

Yes the pilot made a successful landing, but on the approach the aircraft looked like a small model being blown all over the sky. It was impressive to see, although a bit scary :)

Yeah, sorry. I was being my blunt self in as much as if he landed, then thats okay really. I tend to be immune to seeing the impressive nature of pilots struggling with the controls and make a perfectly safe landing. Plus, if he had anything about him, and it was dangerous, he would have diverted. After all, I have seen the ones that should have, but didn't.

I like the response tho. And while I am on it, we have a float plane that flys to Oban Harbour. Does it "land" on the water?

Yes was hairy yesterday and into this morning. Has just dropped in the past hour. Came past Harewood saw mills yesterday and they have a big display of sheds etc - or rather they did - not a one was where it should be or the right way up!

Luckily all is well chez Pammy:D

Glad to hear other northerners have faired OK.

Only if it doesn't sink :o :o :o :o

Regarding your very valid point about diverting, then that thought crossed my mind. The aircraft did not look very stable at all, and further south there was no problems with the wind. I would like to think that pilot has a good explanation, or............................. The video footage made the situation look far, far worse than it really was.

He was probably based at Multiflight so that was home base and it could have been just the 2 crew on board so they might have gambled a bit more.

I landed at Edinburgh airport last night around 17:00 - it was an "interesting" landing to say the least. The autopilot (I presume) was really struggling to keep the plane lined up with the runway as we came in. There were some quite violent corrections right up until landing and then it was unceremoniously dumped on the deck.

A few passengers gave a spontaneous round of applause as we started to slow down. We had to sit in a holding area for a few moments whilst a parking space became available - the plane was literally shaking with the wind blowing against it.

These posts are certainly highlighting something that perhaps scumbag can answer?

Is there a maximum permissible speed of crosswind that specific aircraft are allowed to land? I accept that a single seat aircraft will be more exposed to these conditions than perhaps a jumbo jet, but who has the last say?

To put this in perspective, the captain of a sea going vessel was deemed in overall command of his ship and would always make the ultimate decision, but in waters covered by the UK Coastguard that has now changed . (allegedly) :)

Just curious

John
