Bad weather up North

John,

I know you like things to do while your're at home , so this may interest you ..

The RNLI have a 'virtual pager' that you can download , you then customise it to which stations you want to monitor , and then the pager alerts you , in real time , when the lifeboats you are watching are called out. Your pager goes off at exactly the same time as theirs !!

You can download it here .

The Thames lifeboats are the busiest in tersm of calls , they tend to just be for people in the water as opposed to the big sinking ship type calls...

January is a busy time for the Thames lifeboats, the Christmas credit card bills come in and down to the river people go.

Mildly amusing ( in a macabre way ) , last week , the lifeboat at Teddington was called out to attend an attempted suicide in Kingston. In the end the chap was pulled out by an off duty policeman before the boat got there .

However, the lady who reported it when questioned , said :-

' I saw this man floating down the river ( which was in flood ) just with his head above the water ... I called out ' Are you alright ?' , to which the man replied ' Yes , Thank you ' ....

How's that for politeness ? ;)

During the night we actually had a trace of frost on the shed roof, but in the morning, all gone, no signs of any at all at all.

Having watched the complete series of Ice Road Truckers it begs the question of why our roads come to a grinding halt at the first sniff of any adverse weather and before anyone mentions snow chains. These trucks only used chains in the most extreme and adverse condition where they had very heavy loads and failed to get a run at any of the really steep hills.
