Bah! Hit and run! :(

it's like they were subject to an earth quake ...

luckily they cost pennies, even from the stealership.

happens, strange though, maybe they were on their last legs and a bit of hammering killed them?

It's the brushes, definitely. The fan almost works, it's set to full speed all the time and if I go over a bump it fires up. If it's set to a slower speed I don't think it ever works, I think with the worn brushes it just needs a bit of assistance to get started :) .

Nice to hear the car is back together Ok.

Have you actually checked the brushes?
My wifes car was doing a not so bad version of this. It turned out to be the motor bearings seizing slightly.
A sqirt of oil and... :)

I took the brushes out and they're tiny, worn down to nothing. The fan works if I squeeze it (pushing the brushes closer to the commutator). The fan only works at all atm because I wedged a load of stuff into the plastic housing to squeeze the fan :) .

I'm getting more and more tempted to just buy a new fan, it's not *that* expensive, not compared to having the rear of my car beaten back into mercedes-shape etc.

Just buy some brushes from an alternator recoditioners, they will be pennies.

Saw an 02 reg E Class run into a Porsche 993 Cabriolet today up at Canary Wharf whilst parking. The driver of the Merc was at fault, and after surveying the scene for witnesses and waiting for them to leave - he did the same and went shopping. B*stard!

Luckily I saw the whole thing and recorded all details. Gave the information to the car parking attendant who was very interested in the information. Poor old Porker owner would have come back to a front bumper that wasn't quite straight.

There is apparently a place near me that rewinds motors, they've been going for years. My dad is going to take the motor to them, see if they have any spare bits :)

Yeah, and maybe a cracked headlamp, broken radiator and all manner of other things under the skin! :(

Shude,

Glad to see things have kinda worked out a lot cheaper than first thought. Best of luck in catching the little t*** who did the damage but it might be best if you didn't get your hands on him  GBH carrys a nasty sentence nowadays mate and it's easy to lose your temper with scum like that.

Take care
