At home for the Merc's i use transformers set to either 12.7 or 12.6 volts fixed and as soon as i park the cars up i have a little hidden connector fitted to them that i hook up and they immediately get power and as the battery starts to discharge it reaches the transformers set level and it takes over the cars load so the battery always remains at that voltage.
Its great for a car parked outside since everything can be kept closed and locked unlike most battery chargers and even better if the car is going to be parked up for a while you can bring the battery inside where its warmer and you wont have any worries about settings or damage to the car.
Edit - If your going to use this as a battery replacement when the car is laid up then you need to have a UPS (just a small computer type unit will be fine) or other similar system on the line, this does not matter if you plan on leaving the battery installed as it will automatically take over in the event of a power failure but if you remove the battery and the transformer shuts off then the alarm will activate and its a PITA.
