You all mention girly cars which im sure lotus doesnt want ;)

How about a peugeot 307 HDI? I just picked a 52 plate one up for £3k 63K in the clock FSH 2 owners..... from the dreaded Ebay! but it was a bargain not a pin dent in sight owned by an elderly bloke since the car was a year old!

heres another example which is good cvalue

typically gives 40-50 mpg

Mark might not - but Fi (Mrs Lotus) wears the trousers in their house:D :D

whoops didnt read that... forget the 307 then...nothing cute about it ;)

Pammy... lol

Id second the polo. Very well engineered little car. They take loads of abuse too.

We just bought my mum and dad a Citroen C1. Citroen seem to have turned a corner with their quality, and it gets great reviews as well. Not sure on the Ncap rating??

We got it on a PCH deal, £300 down, £99 a month for two years, 10,000 miles per year (Prices plus VAT) Told it will do high 40's TTG, and has a CD player:bannana: Pick it up next week with a bit of luck.:D

Thanks so much for your responces.
BenzC, If I remember the C1 shares its base with a Toyota and a Peugot perhapse this is a good sign for the build quality! (really like the look of it dohhhh cant buy a Citroen!!!)

Yup, same car, same production line £1500 pounds cheaper!!:bannana:

Why cant you buy a Citroen mangetout:p

We have a Jazz too (and ours is easily in the high 40's MPG club). We've had it 3 yrs and it's a marvellously well put together car.

Its weak point is probably seat comfort though, and I'm quite seriously not sure 'a rotund 6' 8" bloke' would even fit in it. And you wouldn't get an 18mth old one for £6K.

We have just helped our daughter buy a Mitsubishi Colt - the 5 door one (which she wanted) looks remarkably like the Jazz, although I think the 3 door is better looking. No idea on whether it would fit you, but our local dealer has a bunch of 3 door models including a/c for under £7K (new).

The original post said-Must be "cute" and a bit "different"

Is this different enough for her Mark???;)

I use various cars for long distance commute.

I've been using a Nissan Note 1.6 auto of late.

Driven gently (around 60) it has been getting 45 to 46mpg. Pushed a bit (70ish) it drops to 43. It's reasonably willing and nippy. Very smooth auto for a small car.

It's a reasonably civilised unpretentious little dual carriageway cruiser and town runabout. The rear seats are adjustable so it can be configured to be spacious at the back for passengers or for luggage depending on your requirements. It's not quite so good for pushing on country roads.

I had a Fiesta 1.6 auto for two short whiles. Absolute dog of a car. Noisy, slow little guzzler. I'm convinced Ford just rummaged round their parts bin and pulled out an old engine and transmission and just threw them together at random. The Micra and Note are nicer. (The 1.4 Micra is appreciably better in auto form than the 1.2).

I'm gonna say this as i had 3 of them...maybe worth a look at

Very quick.. cheap to run... VW parts 35mpg on the turbo. My bro is 6'2" and had plenty of headroom in the cupra
Lower spec models like this one does more mpg.

We shall be having a good session of test drives this weekend but I did have a sit in a couple today, I will not mention which as I dont want to offend but WHAT HAPPENED!! is it now illegal to have character in a car these days. the same CAD package has been used on them all.

MKIV Golf GT TDI. Fits all your bills but don't a have a clue about NCAP ratings nor is it cute or different.

It sounds like you are after a commuter tool though which is exactly what it is.

I'd save your odd ball car for the weekends.

EDIT: 4 NCAP stars!

I agree with SEM the Ibiza is a good little motor, find yourself a TDI 130 and it'll be a pocket rocket along with the mpg you desire!
