Big Bang Spring

Hi all,
Heres a puzzler for you, I've got a E220cdi estate 04 reg with 98k on the clock,and I've just bought a E280 sport 06
So the estate has been sitting on the drive for a few weeks, earlier on I heard a bang and the alarms sets off on the car.
On investigation the front of the car has collapsed, managed to jack it up and it would seem the front o/s spring has snapped??
Unfortunately i've got to go to work so won't be able to strip it down until after the weekend.
Has anyone experienced this before? is there any info on this sort of thing around? is it covered by mercedes lifetime warranties?

Will let you all know it is when I get the chance

ps. the car hadn't been used for 4 days :dk:

Just changed both fronts on an E estate. Unless you have huge capacity spring compressors dont even think about it. I have a set of three which were originally for a Volvo 260GL. They are of massive construction and were toiling to get the E springs down small enough to get the top cap on. Last inch or two they were creaking and my heart was in my mouth. Never again.

Time for some rust preventative wax on your brake pipes Druck.

Agreed. Although the pic makes them look a lot worse than they are. What looks like rust in quite a few places is actually mud.

Please use the correct tool for this job. It is available from Klann at about £1600. I have the tool of course.

I got mine from the US and did the job and then sold them on ebay for more than I bought them for and they are good quality as well.
Just go into ebay.com and you will have a good selection or if you don't want to buy one just buy your springs and find a garage that has the right gear that will fit them for you.

I have had 2 Mercs both had the springs break on them the first was 190E parked on driveway after work and had the same as you a big bang which was offside front spring broke, second was a c-class 202 and the rear spring had broken but the rears aren't too bad because you can do the job without a compressor.

Hope this helps.
