bit of a project . . .

think that might take a bit more than a visit from fix a chip!

The front bumper is worth more than the current high bid. ;)

My dream car ........only in my dreams the bodywork is a bit better ! :D

Any guesses for restoration cost v final value.

Final value around £25-£30K.
Restoration cost around £25-£30K. :D

Parts for these cars are serious money, although most of the expensive bits are there (you'd have to check the condition of the bumpers, grille, cills, hood frame etc. Looks alright actually if you had the ability and time to restore it.

That was cheap - someone has picked up a bargain

Do you really think it was cheap? There seem to be plently of $35000 190sl in the uS and they look lovely. Say £20,000.

Wow Janner..... good find !

That is a stunning stunning car.....

That's the way to advertise a car.

A stunning car - nice find.

Like I say, hopefully £20k will buy a nice one.

the fact that the one on eBay was almost complete - despite needing attention you wouldn't need to be sourcing many parts. From that point, £10k would go an awful long way towards getting a finished car if you were doing the majority of the work yourself.

Yes, the one Janner found looks great but it's also on the other side of a very large pond and the auction is still running. By the time taxes, shipping etc (presumably import duty would be payable) I doubt you'd be seeing much change out of £30k to get the car onto the road here in the UK.

The eBay one we saw sold for less than £10k, at those prices this would leave a further £20k to spend restoring it to it's former glory.

I still reckon, that in the grand scheme of things that's a bargain for somebody :)

Hi Andy,
I think you have hit the nail on the head with that huge word 'if'.

The US option looks magnificient but there is of course the transportation and importation problem.

To carry out a proper, full and complete restoration without the use of big dollops of filler is a job for experts. No doubt there are people that could do this restoration themselves but for the rest of us we would surely be looking at spending out a fortune?? I wonder how much it would cost to to covert a Left Hand drive version and would it be a cheaper option?

This US advert is again a credit to the seller and is the second quality one I have seen from across the 'pond'.

Regards,
John

I don't think anyone takes on a restoration of this nature without at least knowing what they are doing in one field of car mechanics.

Half the fun of running a classic is the joy of having rebuilt it yourself.

Andy

For me the joy would be driving this baby on a nice summer's day!
One of those cars that just makes people stop and look. Not flash, just WOW!

That UK one is never going to be as nice as this. I hope whoever bought it has a heated garage and lots of spare time this winter.

I have always wanted to own an MG TC, but this US Mercedes SL is the business.

I understand what Andy is saying and feel I could do quite a lot of the maintenance, but the bodywork skills required for the UK project is way, beyond DIY skills that I could only dream of possessing. I see that there is a new front end with the car, but to me it will need just about new everything. Front and rear wings, doors, boot etc etc can these all still be purchased?

John
