Black 190e 25-16 heading south on M3 yesterday afternoon

Bugger it.

Claim you saw an imaginary child and slap the anchors on. Have the tailgater ram you at 70/80/90 mph. Create mayhem for 8 hours affecting thousands of other road users. This will clog up the roads and the internet. Wait six weeks to have your car fixed or argue about it being written off by your insurers.

Alternatively.

Drive with respect for ALL OTHER road users and obey the Highway Code. Do not exceed the speed limit. Do move to the left lane where possible. Have respect for all other road users.

Your call............................

You shouldn't be in the right hand lane if you are driving at the same speed as the car in the middle lane.

It's an overtaking lane you see.

Welland, do you really think you'll get nicked if you accelerate to 75 or 80 (on your speedo) to pass another car in the middle lane & pull back in, thus clearing the LH lane?

You KNOW you won't , EVER, so just scoot along & move over.

Your 'King of the Castle' lane hogging because you are a stickler for the speed limit creates a high speed, bumper to bumper convoy resulting in aggressive driving & undertaking from frustrated motorists.

ACCELERATE & MOVE OVER!

Well said.....

A wee bit general there:

Please tell me how doing 80mph on a quiet motorway with little traffic on fair conditions is dangerous. I really would love to know

I take your point re town driving and on some rural roads attempting even the speed limit is folly but a quiet dual carriageway/MWAY or even a sweeping A road 70-80mph isn't dangerous.

Ah. You missed the tongue in cheek nature of my comment. I agree that in the right circumstances 80 is no more dangerous than 70. But I was responding to the OP and his attitude to the car behind him pushing along at 80 in what was clearly not a quiet M-way. I believe the OP was more annoyed at the type of car rather than the event itself. I suspect that had it been a car like his own he would not have posted.

Hmmm ,

I'd also have to wonder whether the OP's C55 is actually any faster than a 190 16 valver ( in its day , the fastest accelerating car in the M-B range and the highest top speed ) . The C55 may have a bigger engine and possibly more torque , but I imagine it will be significantly heavier than a 190 . Both cars probably limited to 155 so top speed ought to be the same .

Not that it's really of any relevance, but a non-cat 2.5-16 manual is good for about 146mph flat out. The C55 may well be limited to 155, but it'd get there quite a bit quicker at those sorts of speeds. Weight of the two cars isn't really all that relevant for top speed, it's the drag and power of the engine that are the main factors. A C55 is a comfortably more powerful car.

The 2.5-16s are pretty quick to about 130-140, but will creep from there onwards.

Will

I think the C55 would not only pull down the pants of the 190 but may well pull them up and over its head too.....:bannana: The C55 is much much faster.....

Just for the record - driving that close to my rear - anyone's rear - is inexcusable whether it's a MB or a Kia...

And no I probably wouldn't have posted if it hadn't have been a MB. But given the car involved it could well have been a member.

You got to be kidding....... surely you can't really think that??

Put your rear fogs on when some idiot tailgates you

He could take a gun out too

True, i think in this situation it may be best to just pull into the middle lane and sensibly get alongside the other car and then ram him from the inside into the central reservation......Or maybe just do nothing.....:D

In a straight line I think the C55 would win hands down. On any kind of twisty road the 16 valve would give it a serious run for the money & in the right hands outrun it.

It is quite possible to embarrass people in machinery much newer & much, much more expensive who are unfamiliar with the chassis & handling characteristics of a well set up W201 16 valver.

Maybe a switch for blue flashing led lights on the rear bumper would slow him down !

I still think it would have to be twisty in the extreme for it to beat a C55 as it has knocking on twice the BHP.....
