Hi

I've got a 210. I need to get another key as we are down to out last. I've found a supplier who can sell me a blank key and he says I can get it re programmed by a lock smith or MB main dealer.

The key is only £30. Qurstion. Is this too good to be true?

How much would it cost to re programme any way?

If your W210 is a flip-style key model (1995-96) then this might be possible. If it has the newer EIS with no flip-key then a locksmith won't be able to do anything with it (maybe cut the blade part to match) and your stealership won't be able to reprogramme the key to work with your car. Keys are issued by the HQ in Germany and are about £130 from the stealership, can be obtained overnight but the metal blade part can take a week to arrive.

If you have an existing key with a damaged casing then I believe you can swap the internals into a good one.
 
Thanks chaps. The only key I have is a 'non flip' key. I think I'll give the blank key a miss and go straigh to MB (with me chq book to the ready!)

You also need ALL your paperwork.
 
The DAS key cost £150,, (I have heard it said that it has gone up to £200)

As shude said you need

Original Log book
Original proof of identy
Signed and dated autherisation from the vehicle owner.

Once recieved the dealer will need to program and sync the key to your vehicle.

This is all from a new MB pubication "The key to greater secuity"

If you wish to send your faulty key to me,,I may be able to fix it
 
I am well aware that keys have been sent out, as I said there is a new publication

I do not know if the rules have changed, but I can read.

The flip keys are the only ones that require synchronisation or any other work on arrival, AFAIK.

The flip keys normally work when replaced in the fob and re sync to the car.

Maybe you should tell MB to change the pretty pictures of the cars in this book, they look new to me, and the picture is new a Chrome DAS111 key and I cant see a flip out key in the brochure

As I said this is a new publication, some of us go out of our way to keep up to date.

I also said that I have heard that the price may have jumped up for a change in procedure. When someone next buys one we will know. Do bare in mind that I did not print the new brochure,, MB did that, I picked it up from the back room of a my dealer, but I have not been back to clarify the situation

You only need to give the car to the dealer if you want them to disable an old key, so long as they order an additional key and not a replacement then all you do is throw the key in the ignition.

Whats mandatory for cost reasons and whats mandatory for technical reasons are 2 different things.
 
My first point here is MB have printed out this new pamphlet, now all I have done is to put it up here,,its new, and fresh off the print and only released last Thursday.

Second a last guy within the last 2 weeks paid £200, so

Have the rules changed ????,, I know the old ones as well as anyone else.

Why did MB publish the above info.

All I have done is to put this info up,, I did not print it.

Please dont knock me until we know. its not a matter of right or wrong, just is this something new ?

Not knocking you at all mate i know your just putting up the info you have and i wouldn't dream of having a go at you for simply providing info.

All i was trying to say is MB put out a lot of BS and this pamphlet is the some additional padding for them you know as well as i do mate that half the stuff advertised as dealer work is actually DIY, the keys being made in the last few weeks are identical to the ones that have been produced for the last god knows how many months its just that now they are saying you need the dealer to set the key up for you.

It's not a technical requirement like needing a new ECU to be married to the car since you can set the key up yourself by sticking it in the ignition but it does make for a nice little earner for the dealers.

I was not referring to you Dan, my only thought are now is that the dealers will hold stock of the blank keys, and program them for your car,, in the brochure they say that they will come out to your home.

These leaflets were in a back store room and not put out yet
 
I just picked up a copy of that leaflet at my dealers this morning.
 
So... to confirm.. if I have blank key.. I can set it up my self using the ignition??

No Sir you cant, they Ebay key will be a used one and MB will no re program it.

Sorry the there has been some discussion here over what is going on. Its possible that the rules are changing.

What is wrong with the old key
 
When I got my new style chrome key (six months ago now) the service guy made the comment the the key worked first time with no need to connect the car up. So certainly back then it looked like there might be the need to do some sync'ing of new keys, but not all the time.

This link (although it comes with a disclaimer) gives a good explainantion of how the key slots and segments work and says that a key ordered as a replacement for a lost one will just work as the DAS will recognize the new segment and automatically disable the old one (as long as the dealer has ordered the right key!! And he'll need to see the car or working key to be able to get the order right.)

So as all those DAS3 already out there won't have changed and the leaflet still says keys have to be ordered. I'm wondering if the insistance on seeing the car given in the leaflet is to try to stop you ordering a key for a car you don't own, but have managed to get hold of the documents for (but is still sat on someone else's driveway).
 
As from the beginning of April all Mercedes dealers are no longer allowed to hand out keys over the counter.If the car is drivable ie still has an operating key the vehicle can be taken to the dealer, if the car is not drivable the dealership will send out a a member of staff to carry out programming, this applies to trade and retail customers alike.As an independent specialist i am not aware of any changes to the keys that actually require programming ( apart from 163 ML's that require synchronising thro Star) This is a case of Mercedes looking as if they are doing everything they can to improve the security of their vehicles but the real reason is to keep cars in the network.
