Hi, back from holiday where i had two BMW test drives. The first was a Z4 the second the brand new 320D.

The Z4:

Fors:
Excellent Grip from 18inch wheels/tyres.
Excellent gearchange, very slick
Excellent engine. 2.2 litre and very revy and smooth.

Against:

Looks. Outside is IMHO ugly
Looks . Inside standard BMW fair.

Overall: Better to drive than look at but a great car.

The 320D SE

For

Good gearshift but not as good as Z4
Good engine, very torquey
Good handling

Against

£28,000 in a reasonable spec
Ride is harder on the standard BM than my lowered suspension Merc. Pretty firm not helped by run flat rubber with strong side walls.
Interior only OK.

Overall.

Very good capable car that does everything well but left me feeling cold. The only thing it does that mine doesnt is offer 40/50mpg!!!

Worth £20k more than mine .................nah!!! Not even tempted.

Hi,
I saw a new 3 series last night. You forgot to mention the bit about the fact that 320 looks just plain fugly and the back of the car is out of character with the rest of it :puke: :( shame because the current lineup was starting to apeal or at least the 7 series was

i was driving a 535d yesterday  holey moley was it quick

were you driving downhill with the help of the wind pushing to assisting your speed? :D

OK ok.. only kidding.. i wonder how the Beemer compares in MPG to the Merc W211??

The new 3 series is not that pretty at all but will most likely grow on some people (i.e. existing customers) just like the 7 series did after a while - however, I am not too keen on the 3 series at all.

Like fungus perhaps :D funnily enough I was talking to a BMW fan the other week and he was slating the new 7's because he didn't like the I-Drive system. He said he was going to stick with his Alpina 7 series till BMW come to their senses :D (think he will be waiting a long time) :D

I upset my local BMW salesmen last year after I took the SL into see a stonechip specialist that has his garage at the back of them. one of the smarmy salesmen came over and started trying to sell me a new 6 I turned round and asked him if he had come over to see how a real car was built :D
He was not very impressed, but it was very amusing for the rest of the guys standing round :D

the new 3's rear looks like the ill fated Mitsubishi "lack of" Carisma

I saw a new 320d 2day in Reading it looked really big and ugly from the back... At least as big as the previous 5-series... the rear lights are very angular and not to my taste at all...
