Hi Guys.
I have a problem with my wifes 2.0d X3(2007). It suffers from intermittent power loss. We plugged it in and it showed an air mass fault. We replaced the air mass meter, still no avail. We opened it up and totally refurbed the turbo, injectors, a new egr was fitted, a new oil breather kit and the dpf has been removed(mapped to compensate)
The car is still suffering with intermittent power loss. There will be no power for 3/4 seconds then all of a sudden it spurts into life. The emmision light is still on and keeps coming up with air mass meter fault. But, everything is brand new.
It is baffling us, the BMW tech says we have changed everything that should be but, are we missing something ?

A competent garage?

The Bmw tech is the guy with the 5 series customer services car with all the diagnostics in the boot. He's working in conjuction with my indy. They are you would assume pretty competent.

it looks like that wasn't the case...

Seen a few issues on this car with intermittent power loss. you won't believe the first one but check it. Check the fan is working if its not it sometimes really screws up the ECU on this car, secondly we saw problems with the traction control software going faulty screwing up the power delivery, thirdly fuel pumps on these can be delicate sometimes giving full delivery and then not. Lastly are you confident the remap is good? this usually is the cause of many post dpf delete problems.

I'm not saying its any of these but worth checking.

Hope it helps and good luck :thumb:

Thanks Ian. I will put all these points forward and see each one through.

When are you next up ?

Just spoke to a BMW indie I know and he said that he only fits OEM or Bosch air mass sensors, so that's a thought. Or it could be the wiring leading up to the sensor.

He was adamant that if the fault is showing up as air mass metre then it has to be directly related to that.

Hi Lee.
We fitted a new Bosch one, the BMW customer services guy checked the wiring too and he saw no fault. Maybe we need to start at the bottom again ?

Can you not try an air mass metre from a BMW that you know is working?

Hook up the diagnostics and watch live data. These are complex cars and it takes a lot of experience with them to be able to get to the bottom of problems quickly

I'd put the car with someone who diagnoses and works on late BMWs every day

+1 about bmwland:thumb:

Get your people to check that the vacuum operation of the swirl flaps isn't sticking and not allowing them to open fully (if you haven't already junked and blanked them off)

Great little engine though.

Hope you fix it....

I had the same problem, and spend a lot of €€€ due to lack of experience from BMW mechanics on this car....

After all the money and time spent I decided to get my hands on it....

Finally fix it!

The issue was the DPF (I think this is a generic problem on this model, since there is a lot reported issues like this on the net and this DPF doesn't have any cleaning mechanism, so with time and mileage it will occur for sure, sooner or later...)

Just clean it or replace it ....

DIY is cheaper but can take around 10 hours of work

Even if you don't have the issue but you car is over 80k Km I recommend cleaning avoiding other costs on turbo, air admission valves and control...

e-mail me to luis.m.co at gmail.com if interested in more details

Disclaimer - I'm not attached to any kind of business related with cars and and DIY are on your own count and risk.

Thanks for the advice but car has been scrapped

Literally?
