I have ordered 2 new gas struts for my 2018 E350d Coupe (C238) but cannot see how to get to the old ones to replace them. It seems pretty straightforward for just about any other car but with mine you can't see the struts and no amount of googling seems to help. I would start removing things to see what's going on but those plastic clips (see pics) look pretty weak so I don't want to pry them open unless I know I need to. Thanks In advance.

That doesnt use struts, it will use springs which are inside the boot, at the sides of the parcel shelf, behind the boot trim.

Now that makes sense as I couldn't figure how those things would fit. Thanks!

Although come to think of it - how can springs work with a push button boot?

Am confused again and the car is not here to start dismantling..

Because they are under tension when the boot is closed. What have you ordered?

D'oh, I wish I'd checked compatibility before ordering them. Never mind, I'm sure I can return them.

What causes the springs to go under tension when the boot is closing?

The problem I'm having is that when opening, the boot only opens about 75% and I have to manually push it up if I want it to open fully.

Any ideas on a resolution?

The boot hinges are connected to the springs.
There used to be alternative fixing points for the springs. A very simple mechanical design.

I think I've figured it. I wasn't clear enough when I said it opens on a button push - it also closes on button push. I think it's controlled by an electric motor. Thanks for your help, sorry for the confusion.
