Is it possible to upgrade a command system to the Bose or Harmon Kardon spec and what is involved?

Is there really that much difference in the sound?

It's almost certainly possible but would no doubt be very time consuming and very expensive.

It would sound better, but whether it would justify the time and expense is a different matter.

I would imagine an aftermarket route might offer a more cost effective and/or better quality system.

Yes it does power and quality,, this is nothing to do with loudness as such.
A little amp at high power like the standard version will go loud but at the same time it will start to put out DC once past the 3/4 mark on the volume control. this can make it sound gritty and does damage the speakers.

With a power amp the sound is clean like with a good home hi fi and though the Bose speakers are also uprated, you will not damage the speakers,

In your car it would be a right pain in the ****.

In the standard config the headunit also contains the running amp so the speaker wiring is routed to it, with the sound system the amp is located in the boot and the wiring would have to be re-directed.

You would also have to get power to it and modify the optical ring but neither of those are particularly hard, the real problem would be the speaker wiring.

this is where Dan wins being hands on and doing it, doing almost anything on these things is very very time consuming

Thanks guys, I think that's just made my mind up to park that idea for a bit.
