I have a W202, 1998 c200. Since i have owned the car it would need topping up ever so slightly every now and again but recently i am finding that i need to top up the brake fluid every 2 weeks as it has keeps dropping below the half way mark from the max mark!!! I know this is not normal.

The previous owner was abit of a mechanic and had changed the pads and fluid a little while before i bought the car, not sure if this might have anything to do with it, everything looks fine to me!

Im not sure what could be doing this. There isnt a leak, no puddles, or anything along that line far as i can tell. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might me?

Thanks

Take a look on the inside edges of the tyres and wheels, you may have to take them off to see, also look at the pipes on the ABS pump for leaks, if the master cylinder is leaking it will go into the brake booster reservoir.

If pipes are rusted you will see the patch under the car, though on a 98 car its doubtful to be that

It is probably leaking into the brake booster. Take off the large vacuum line and dip somthing inside it to see if there is any brake fluid in there.

Could be a weeping caliper seal too.

Sort it sooner than later, it could prove to be dangerous.

Thanks for the replys guys, prompt as usual television!

Is the vacuum line going to be no. 62 on the dirgram?

Also Malcolm could you confirm for me where the abs pump is, so i can check for leaks as i am not 100%? What type of leak am i looking for?

Thanks

Check the vacum hose if it has one that is connected to inlet manifold to see if the engine is sucking brake fluid?

Hi,
Is it manual or auto, if manual the clutch could be another source of a leak.

it is also possible that there is a loose brake nipple ,especially if the brake fluid has been changed recently .Your best bet is to have a look behind the wheel on each corner on a dry day of course !

It is an auto. Its a bit dark now so i will have to take off the vacuum line tomorrow and see if fluid is collecting inside the booster and also check the brake nipples if i get time!!
