Brake Hold Function

I discovered something really useful on my E320 the other day. It is probably in the manual, but who consults a manual for things like brakes!!

When I pull up at a junction and the car comes to a complete stop if I press down harder on the brake a light comes up on the dash saying HOLD, the brakes are then locked on and I can move my foot off the brake pedal and hover over the accelerator ready for the off. As soon as I touch the accelerator the brakes are released and away I go! It is really handy on the downhill as you no longer have to keep your foot on the brake until you are ready to pull away.

Is this a common feature on all MB? Have I been driving my C class for 3 years without knowing about it or is it just a new feature??

It's a feature all right, albeit certainly not common on all mercs, it's a relatively new addition to the gadget list.

Well, it certainly wasn't installed overnight by some fairies :D I can recommend reading the owner's manual ;)

If you have the brake hold, you might also have the 'queue of traffic stop start thingy'. (That's not the technical name).

On mine, using the cruise control/speed limit switch while in 'hold' I can set it so that to pull away I just press the accelerator and to then slow down again I only have to lift off and the car will gently brake to a stop without me touching the brake pedal. It'll work up to about 40mph and then it turns itself off, presumably because they assume you're no longer in a queue of traffic. I can't remember the exact sequence for activating it, but it's somewhere in the book.

The ultimate in lazy driving!

And up there with the - "do you really trust your car to stop" driving as well. :D :D

You did see the S class with the self triggering emergency stop test didn't you - when it didn't:D

Was that the new distronic based system? Where they had tried to fake it when showing to journalists?

I know what you mean, but it's OK because you're generally doing up to maybe 15 mph and you can soon tell whether the car's slowing down enough or not and if not you apply a little brake.

Also, not related to Distronic - mine doesn't have that. :(

It is not so new. It was an option first on the CLS cars but now it is being offered across the range. i was not too bothered though as i had two autos and hated them and i have sworn to stick to manuals.

Ah, here speaks the lazy man who loves all this. Cannot wait for auto steer as well or, is that what you call a chauffeur?

Had a little play when I went out to lunch but didn't master it! I suppose I will have to read the book now I have discovered WHERE the book is!! Fancy hiding it in the rear arm rest rather than the glove compartment!! I suppose it tells you in the book that it is stored in the arm rest :D :D

Just going back to the title of the thread, you seem to imply a degree of dissatisfaction.

Norfolk hasn't caught up with the concept of reading it seems  :D .

Brake Hold FUNCTION!!!!

I was going to amend the original post, but then I decided that would cause even more confusion to anyone reading it later!

This is known as SBC hold and came about in 08 03 it is only on cars with SBC braking system. it is not on cars before that date. There are 2 parts to it SBC hold and SBC stop

Didtronic + is something else, the advantage of the + is that it will allow the distronic to bring the car to a complete standstill and move the car off again as the trafic starts moving.

He won't have the 'queue of traffic stop start thingy'. It's proper name was SBC Stop and (the clue being in the name) was part of the Sensotronic Brake Control. SBC Stop was discontinued in 2004 and SBC itself went with the introduction of the E Class facelift. It also died in the CLS somewhere early in 2006.

SBC Hold being such a useful feature, it has been replicated in the new brake system as Brake Hold.
