My brakes have started to squeal like a pig ( deliverance ) and are really begining to annoy me.
What causes this and what are the remedys?

I've started to get that too. If I ease off the brakes slightly and re-apply them its fine. I was just going to put up with it until the next service.

as no doubt all the other threads will tell you it's a common"fault" and your first audible warning that the disks are wearing.

Replacement is easy and it stops the noise dead :)

Disks are wearing, or pads are wearing? What's wrong with a light like other cars have!

when your pads start to wear thin you'll get the warning light. I can't think of any car that gives you a warning light for when the disks are wearing.

This problem isn't unique to Mercs, it's a problem with vented disks, as they get thinner/worn they start to resonate .

New pads will stop it temporarily as the contact area will be different but at the end of the day changing both at the same time will be the best plan.

It really isn't a difficult job (well it wasn't on our W124) just make sure you replace the caliper bolts as they have a type of single use thread lock on them.

Most cars ive seen have only got pad wear sensors on the front. The back you have to get your hands dirty by taking the wheel off to look, or get a torch and look through the wheels to check the wear on the pads.If my memory serves me correct its usually 2 sets of pads to 1 set of disks before you need to replace both items at ther same time. Can anyone remember when the brake material was riveted on to the backing plate, when that started to squeel by the time you could do anything about it the disks were scored to hell.

I woudn't do it yourself not on your car anyway,As I seem to remember reading (I thought it was on my how-to but it isn't) that the newer cars have some weired sh*t happening with the brakes if they haven,t been "de' energized" by use of a laptop to stop the calipers clamping shut on your pinkies as your trying to take out the pads?

Well this isn't usually the cause of the problem... not for me anyway.

Normally I find that it's caused by the rubberised anti-rattle backing on the backs of the pads failing to damp the vibration of the pads as they are applied to the discs.

I fixed this on my C-Class by cleaning the backs of the pads and putting copper slip on their back faces and edges (nowhere near the friction surfaces). I then carried on with the same pads until they were nearly worn out, when I routinely changed them.

The other symptom is where the brakes squeal when you're not applying them, sometimes going round corners etc, but go quiet when you stand on them.

Ian.

mine now squeel when braking in reverse, but not in drive... after just replacing the pads and discs.

must coppaslip them....
