CLS 55 (SOLD)
Hi guys,

I need to get a whole new set of pads and discs for my CLS 55, any suggestions about any other brands I can purchase or do I have to bite the bullet and pay £696 from Benz dealer?

I know someone that works there so I can get a further 10% off but that is still £626... :dk:

If you don't mind using Pagid discs and pads, Front and rear discs and pads work out at £324 from Eurocarparts. You canget them even cheaper from Carparts4less dot com.

Be aware Pagid have been known to cause annoying squeaking on some cars.

ATE and Textar are other brands stocked at ECP but at a higher price.

Thanks for the info. I always buy after market cheaper brands for cars I have had in the past. But in regards to the amg don't you think it would be better to just buy OEM parts for performance etc?

£600 (assuming fitted?) for original equipment brake components for a heavy and powerful car does not seem like a particularly high price.

I imagine that a respected brand of tyre for your car would come to a similar amount for 4?

It is often forgotten by second or third owners (not suggesting this in your case) that a car that may have originally cost over £50,000 for example will come with replacement parts prices commensurate with the original cost of the vehicle.

Yes, I'd buy OEM for my AMG, but I assumed you found them a bit expensive and were looking for a cheaper alternative.
Hopefully Don's link will prove cheaper OEM.

can we be certain pagid don't supply BRAKE parts to Mercedes , because Mercedes wont make them themselves .

I found pagid to be very good , the pads came with new retainer clips , piston cover and also the wear sensors . £ 98 for the fronts inc new discs .

There are two indy's that post on these forums that refuse to fit Pagid because of brake squeal. As I said, some members suffered from brake squeal, not all.

ive not fitted them yet , so I cant comment .

It was actually cheaper through Mercedes benz of Brighton rather than don''s link. Oh well, it's not that much of a big deal just seeing what my options are. Thanks for the responses AMGeed.

I did mine myself and did take extra care when fitting as I had read posts about pagit brake squeal! Filed and wet and dried all mating faces and plenty copper slip and no problems. Infact they feel more efficient than old merc ones. Ok I know there new but old ones were nowhere near had it but merc said they were so brought them before removing wheels to check myself plus wanted to paint calipers so needed new anyway.

FWIW Pagid, Textar, Mintex and several others are brand names of TMD friction http://www.tmdfriction.com/sites/co...es/Factsheet_TMD_Friction_Group_July_2014.pdf
There are also various theories/claims/rumours scattered about the internetz from something along the lines of eurocraparts bought the rights to the Pagid brand name in the UK and they're actually reboxed Mintex pads from one of TMDs second tier/non OEM manufacturing plants at one extreme to Pagid and Textar only being made in one of TMDs OEM factories at the other

Eurocraparts say (quoted from Euro Car Parts Heritage | Quality Car Parts| 180+ Branches Nationwide April 2014)...
Martin Gray, chief executive officer at Euro Car Parts, said: “We are very excited to be launching these Textar brake pads and discs in partnership with TMD Friction. Stocking both Textar and TMD’s Pagid brand is an offering unique to Euro Car Parts in the UK. They are both OE, but each with their own formulation and characteristics.

Following hotrodders post above, I had an issue when I attempted to source Sachs coils springs for my CLK.

Being a long-term BMW maintainer, I have high regard for Textar brake products and ZF group products (ZF,Lemforder, Boge and Sachs), so when I needed to replace the rear coil springs I looked up the ZF webcat for the Sachs part number.

I found a comment there that stated 'not for UK' against all likely Sachs springs. I emailed ZF customer service to ask how I purchase Sachs springs in the UK. They replied that ECP are the Sachs spring distributor and I would have to contact them.

As usual, the ECP website was not sufficiently specific to positively identify the spring I needed (MB 210 324 36 04) so I phoned them to crosscheck their part number against the MB number.

When I aked them to confirm the manufacturers number of their most likely Sachs spring, they replied with a manufacturers part number that I didn't recognise and certainly not a Sachs number. Afterwards I found out it was actually a Lesjofors part number.

I have nothing against Lesjofors, but did read they have been buying spring makers in Slovakia and Asia. I therefore bought my springs from MB.

I future I will be buying any Textar and Sachs parts I need direct from Germany as it seems there may be some doubt that the UK sourced parts are actually the brand you expect.

Sometimes the MB price is much more than pattern but not always. The rears are about £80 more for MB discs, pads and sensor than Pagid so I used MB. I used Pagid fronts without squeal on C55 BUT, as always, you need to be very careful to clean and level (I used a file across the face and a wire brush vigorously applied) as there can be rust on the hubs, and very careful assembly. Those bloody locating screws can rust in place too, had to drill one of them out! Oh, and bed them in carefully too over lots of time not just the first 3 times you press the foot pedal.

At the risk of opening the quality Pandora's box, as the discs are just cast iron on all our relatively humble steeds (as opposed to carbon) as long as they fit well, are properly machined and are well balanced is there less to the maxim 'OEM is best'?
