Breaking news this morning!
Sadly - his passing might be a bit late for Zimbabwe to recover from the years of his rule.

Miserable son of a bitch good riddance. Unfortunately it will not get better for the people. I started school there (Southern Rhodesia) and a brother and sister were born there. Beautiful country & people which he ruined. Unfortunately, that is Africa.

In some ways , the old 'thanks' button was more appropriate than 'like' .

Like him or not history will have him down as one of the most influential political figures in a post colonial Africa. :(Being a shrewd political operator, I often thought he derived an air of respectability for many years from his association with Nelson Mandela's ANC which he milked for all it was worth. An example of how a revolutionary freedom fighter becomes a despot over the years as a result of power unfettered by the normal democratic process of government- this often surrounded by the backing of a ruling tribe or political faction increasingly un-representative of the majority. The dominance of the ZANU-PF party continues in the form of his former deputy [ head of "security";) ?] Emmerson Mnangagwa who now runs Zimbabwe.
the phrases:-
one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter
and
all power corrupts-absolute power corrupts absolutely

seem aposite

Good riddance. Even if he hadn't been a thug, power corrupts eventually. The wiser democracies limit the term of office for their leaders.

Not forgetting blaming an external entity for all the country's ills....
One dies, another is born.....

An odious man who was an insult to the human race. One man destroyed a country

He was a darling of our nation for many decades. When exactly did he fall from grace.... around 2000?

According to a British diplomat interviewed today the major economic rot set in when Mugabe acquiesced to war veterans demands to seize white owned farms and redistribute them to said veterans.
BBC News | AFRICA | Zimbabwe land grab begins
Economy of Zimbabwe - Wikipedia

Many of these "war veterans" were nothing of the sort and were simply cronies who had their loyalty bought with some of the most productive farmland in the entire continent which they then made a right mess of.

Yep they were a huge exporter of food and now the people are starving. Cannot grow maize in cattle country and vise versa. They took farms exporting cash crops and some of the best beef in the world, divided them up (amongst his cronies) and went back to subsistence farming.

Mugabe went about systematically slaughtering his opposition (and the Matabele who were anti him) while the UK and the rest of the world stood back and watched. Sadly South Africa is going the same way.

I wonder if he was a member of the forum?
Perhaps a banned member .

Come to think of it , there might have been a 600 Grosser owners forum - with members like Mugabe , Idi Amin , Pol Pot , Kim Jong , Gadaffi et al ...

Can you imagine the grumpy old men type conversations that would have happened on there , and if there was a falling out , an air strike could have been sent in !
