Broadband, Phone TV options

This is correct in general, but:

Some providers have LLU (Local loop Unbundling), which means they only lease from BT the physical copper wire from the Exchange to the premises. These ISPs will have their own kit in BT's Exchange so can offer different speeds than BT do - up to the limit of the physical wire obviously.

Also, even for those who do resell the service they buy from BT Wholesale, there can be differences in speed depending on how the ISP kit upstream is busy.

So in a nutshell they all depend on BT to some extent - because BT owns the local loop - but you could still see some diversity in performance between different providers for the same premises.

A check on my local exchange services has ADSL checked and nothing else, a note also adds "This exchange has BT Wholesale as the sole provider of broadband services"

No LLU available at the exchange so from that I am assuming other ISP's have no way of increasing the broadband speed.

One of the few disadvantages of living in a remote area I'm afraid.

I can only assume UCR's comment was made because he's new and hasn't read the forum headings. Even so not the politest one.

I thought it quite rude from a self appointed administrator who could not be bothered to check the facts first.

I have this Orange package, which includes:

Line rental
mobile phone (new Nokia provided) with 250 any network minutes + texts per month
free UK landline calls 24/7 + free calls to 30 countries 24/7
broadband

All for £25.00 per month. 18 month contract. Suits me. Not interested in lining Rupert Murdoch's pockets.

If so sounds a bargain.

True, LLU is not available everywhere as it is only commercially viable for busy Exchanges.

I'm currently with Tiscali (now bought by Talk Talk). I use Windows live Mail for work purposes and more often than not cannot get my Tiscali account mail. Thay keep saying to reset my Live mail but I've done that several times now and it always reverts back. Consequently I am looking for another provider too as the customer service with Talk Talk is not a patch on that, that was offered by Tiscali. Oh and the hard-wired connection is slower too, have done a few line tests now and as Virgin is not an option here it seems BT offer the best connection speed.
I just want best line speed, Windows live mail to work (it works with Gmail fine) and a resonable customer service centre. I'm thinking it's too much of a big ask.:(
The bigger they are the less they care.

With the new BT fibre that's being installed, sky will be offering this as a broadband package soon. There is already trials running and it is available in my area next April. This will take there speed to the 20mb and it will be reliable. BT is also testing 100mb fibre as well. Only a matter if time before the prices drop as virgin will no longer be the only provider of super fast broadband.
Personally I had it all with virgin, full hd, 50mb telephone cost £80 a month. Got rid of it as that us an insane amount for what is essentially a load of crap on a lot of channels!

Yes, includes broadband. I reckon it's a bit of a bargain too. My monthly Orange bill never exceeds £25.00, so I know exactly how much to budget for each month. Switching from BT saved me a small fortune.
